My husband had a parotidectomy and a neck dissection 10 days ago. We’ve never had any sort of surgery before but he is still in a lot of pain.

On Wed he was feverish and vomiting with a headache so we went to an and e and he was very dehydrated and seemed to improve with iv fluids. They checked his bloods and did obs for 24 hours, and also did a ct scan to check the wound which had a little liquid but nothing to worry about.

We have been home 48 hours but he still isn’t great, the headache and nausea have gone but his ear is very painful (they gave antibiotics for this). So am just wondering is this normal? Given we’ve just been in hospital I don’t think I can take him anywhere else until we’ve given a bit more time

thnk you x

  • Give his CNS a ring to organise his surgeon look at him if only to tweak his pain meds

  • Hi,

I had parotidectomy and neck dissection last May. I had a few days with a funny ear and was told by my surgeon that the reason was because they was working around the ear. Also the facial nerv has experienced trauma, I had horrific pain around my temple area. But the pain didn't last long, but the area was rather tender.

When hubby's sitches are removed make sure to tell them any concerns.

All the best for your husbands recovery. X

  • Only had tonsillectomies and neck dissections but all the nerves are intertwined in that area so often felt like I had earache when I did not - just nerve damage.  It settled down soon enough.  But as has been said give his CNS a call, especially since he has had a trip to A&E
