I am now nearly 4 months in recovery after having radiotherapy. My uvula and soft pallet has dropped so low it’s brushing on my tongue and making me heave. My mouth feels half the size and my swallow is half a swallow, that’s the best I can explain it as. Food and tablets get stuck behind the pallet I have to keep checking it up which is so embarrassing and spitting it out. Not very lady like I know. Plus I have to keep checking and spitting out thick mucous from my throat. Is this all normal? I have told my consultant but he has said my uvula and soft pallet is still healing and early days. But my soft pallet is not going to go back up again it has had it. My next visit to the consultant I am going to be more adamant about asking to remove some of the soft pallet so I can eat and swallow better. It’s all I can think about everyday because it’s causing me distress. Has anyone else been through this or have some advice as I’m at my wits end with it, it’s really making me feel depressed.
Hi
My uvula was hugely inflamed then disappeared to a stump.
You need your soft palate to stop food going up your nose when you swallow.
You are still early in your recovery and you need to strengthen those swallowing muscles. Are you doing swallow exercises twice a day? The main reason food gets stuck is that your swallow isn’t hard enough. Keep practising.

I do the swallowing everyday and it hasn’t made any difference. The food I’m eating is going behind the soft pallet and staying there and my mouth feels heavy and full which is uncomfortable and not right at all. I was hoping they could take some but not all of soft pallet away to stop me gagging as it’s dragging on my tongue and also it would stop food lying there in my mouth and I wouldn’t have to hack to make it go away
I’m having the same sort of problem. Area of tonsil extraction and soft palette were treated with radiation and area still feels a bit swollen. Swallowing is ok and sensation improves during the day. At last consult two weeks ago was told it is scar tissue and would settle down. It is worrying though. Next appointment a pet scan 20th February. Just wondering if I should ask for check before then. 3 months 2 weeks post radiotherapy.
But I don’t want to be seen as complaining or moaning about things
You won’t be. If you’re in trouble they would be happy to see you.
