I have posted similar before, but I thought it was worth posting the latest data I have.
Today I sat in on my local Trust's annual cancer performance review and was particularly interested in the head and neck statistics. Of nearly 2000 patients referred on a 2 week pathway for suspected head and neck cancer only 4.8% of those went on to have a cancer diagnosis.
I know that being placed on the 2WW is a great stress for many who come on here seeking reassurance - and we offer that - but it is useful to give the actual stats from one particular hospital. I suspect most are not far off this % conversion rate.
Incidentally this is second lowest rate of positive diagnosis for all the cancers measured (that is a national measure).
Hi Peter. Thanks for that a useful stat to give to people. As we know throughout the years we get many people pop in then we don’t hear again but it those weeks we can feel their terror.
Thanks again

I thought you were retired?
If you have any clout have a go at the appalling provision for dental care in head and neck cancer patients.

I retired into an NHS Trust Lead Governor role!!! Almost a full time job without pay. However, it does provide a really good way to start to pay back to the NHS in my local area for all the good work they do for me and the people who need their support. We are lucky here that we have a very good H&N service at secondary level allied with tertiary care in Southampton. Alas my sphere influence does not encompass non hospital dental care, but I can drip feed thoughts into any senior ICB and NHS regional managers I come across!

It's what we need....The Swallows has a petition going about post treatment NHS dental care
It has taken me weeks of to and fro emails to Shropshire and Telford ICB to get my GP permission to prescribe Duraphat. Lots of people wouldn't know where to start.
Keep flying the flag. Surviving HNC iso one thing but we have to survive with QOL

Hi Dani, thanks for all your work on this. I wonder if it’s easier here in Scotland - my restorative dentist at the hospital simply went onto the system and added it to my GPs list of medications for me as a repeat prescription.
It was as simple as that when I lived in Wales. NICE has Duraphat as a dental treatment and as such must be prescribed by a dentist BUT there is an exception for HNC patients who have no access to an NHS dentist. Some trusts are perfectly OK with this but some need reminding.
It's not just tertiary care though. I am a case in point and I'm not alone. I broke a tooth which has decayed underneath an old crown. It needs extracting before it gets infected and puts me at risk of ORN but the extraction has to be done in hospital. I have a referral from my local NHS clinic but have been told to expect a six month wait.
So I now have a private appointment with an Maxfac surgeon. It shouldn't have to be this way. I understand I am not dying on an A&E trolley but even so........
