NG Tube lifespan

Once you get a NG tube fitted when does is need replacing? My tube was fitted around 7 weeks ago half way through the RT. A few weeks later I had a bridle fitted, does this get replaced more often?

  • Hi

I didn’t have a bridle, instead my NG was just taped to my nose and cheek.
Bridles are fitted to stop the tube being pulled out by accident especially in children so I suppose taping them achieves the same thing.
My NG tubes ( I had two) lasted around six weeks each. I vomited both up and I know that no amount of tape would have stopped that.
I think the dieticians like to change NGs every six weeks anyway. They tend to get really yukky where they sit inside the stomach.

  • Well i‘m not looking forward to getting it changed thats for sure! Its been in at least 7 weeks and there’s no mention yet of it getting changed. Would that be a hospital appointment /X-ray  or would the community nurse alone change it at home?

  • Dietician did mine when it "fell" out. It took a couple of minutes. The second time I pulled it out of my nose and threw it in the bin

  • I have had my NG tube in since first fitted last September and no mention of it being replaced with a new one. I shall enquire about this as I've been told by my GP that I shall have to wear one until the day comes where my lights go out.

  • Hi I had my first one changed at 3 weeks after fitting it was due for a change again week 3 of recovery but I could swallow enough to sustain myself so with nurses permission I took it out. It smelt awful. No bridle just taped up.
