Mouth Ulcers

My husband finished his treatment for tongue cancer (35 radio and 2 chemo) at the beginning of September.
Although the treatment was a challenge he has been lucky enough to eat all the way through and not utilize his RIG.
We are now over 3 months post recovery and the main thing he is struggling with is ulcers. They just don’t seem to want to go. We have been to the GP and tried different medications including antibiotics and steroids but none seem to help.
Does anyone have any tips on what we can utilize to help these heal or foods to avoid which might be preventing them from healing.

  • Hi

ulcers can be a problem for a long time. I know I had one along the whole length if my tongue for months. The best thing is to make sure your husband keeps his mouth as moist as he can to avoid an environment that fosters bugs of all sorts and to keep a food diary. Doing that should soon show up the foods that are making things worse. Also get your GP to check he doesn’t have thrush. Antibiotics will do that absolutely no good at all

  • Hi   I can still be plagued with ulcers even 7 years post. In my case triggers tend to be tomatoes and acidic / citric things. Try keeping a food diary l also gelclair after treatment was the only thing that worked antibiotics don’t usually help. Mouth rinse with I carb p, salt and water solution1 teaspoon of each to a litre of water can help. Plus like Dani says ask go to check for oral thrush if he’s got that he need Flucozonole prescribing. Our mouths can remain sensor some of us. I know I. One of them.
