No follow up after 12 week scan

Hi, my partner was recently treated for hpv left tonsil cancer which had spread to his left lymph node, 6cm. He completed chemo/radio treatment for 6 weeks and they gave him a full PET scan at 12 weeks. He then received a letter to say they were happy with the results and there was to be no more follow up appointments or scans. This has made him incredibly anxious, especially as he feels no improvement to his tonsil. Is this standard procedure now? It’s a very sudden end to a horrendous time and I feel like they’re not understanding his issue. He has asked for a appt to get some closure from the consultant, he wants his tonsil removed but obviously they’re not going to do that. Thanks in advance and hope you are well.

  • Hi TWK, firstly well done to him for finishing his treatment, the scan result is good news. It does seem very strange that they have said no more appointments, the normal is to have check-ups for the next 5 years. Are you sure it actually says no more appointments? If it does you should give his team a call, to get it cleared up, it could well be an error in the admin dept.

    Ray.

  • Hi TWK

    Great news on the scan.

It does seem a bit strange - I remember being told ‘no more treatment’ was needed but I‘ve had scans and checks since last summer and expect them to continue. I would check with your CNS first - they’ll be able confirm what happens next and spot if there’s an issue.

I was also hugely anxious that I wasn’t being checked enough and a chat with my CNS really helped me understand the process and helped put my mind at rest.

    take care

  • The norm is follow-ups for 5 years...as Old Biker has stated.

    Call your CNS for clarification.

  • Hi, thank you for replying, I did in fact call them to check this. We will have telephone check ups but no more scans. I’ll close this chat because I got it wrong, apologies. I still not sure why he would have no more scans though, even just to check. Thanks again.

  • Thank you for replying, yes it is so stressful and to be told no more scans after having only one has ramped up the anxiety. I did check and we will get follow up appts, so I was wrong about that. Thanks again and all the best to you.

  • Hi I’m 7 years post treatment for HPV tonsil cancer with lymph nodes. I was referred back to my local ent for my check ups inwas treated at Leeds cancer centre then send back to Pinderfields at Wakefield  hospital. Are yiu in the UK just checking  as we have people from all over the world on the forum.?

I’ve  7 years of being in here I can’t recall at all anyone who didn’t have regular follow ups so contact his cancer nurse for verification. Even people of the pet neck 2 trial are seen in t( first year. We don’t have any more scans as they aren’t needed unless the consultant thinks they are.
As for his tonsil being taken out it’s more than likely melted during treatment mine did along with my uvula the dangly bit at back of throat so no need to worry about tonsil being removed.
Lowell done for getting through treatment but please check on the follow ups for him

it’s possible an admin issue but check

  • Good evening TWK, I agree with Ray (old biker) about being on your consultants' books for the next 5 years, so please get in contact with your team. I never understand why they don't remove people's tonsils when they are causing problems, but there must be a logical reason. Wishing you all the best in your continued recovery.
