Incomplete response on PET scan

Hi , My husband just found out his PET scan results yesterday following chemoradiation for base of tongue Hpv 16 +ve scc cancer with cervical lymph nodes involved too.  While we are delighted that his tongue showed no cancer he has a lymph node which has showed incomplete response and is now facing lymph node removal surgery (dissection). He has no metastases elsewhere in his body. I was wondering if this has happened to anyone else.

  • I had my lymphs removed a long while prior to CRT.  I know that does not help, but what I can say is that a neck dissection is nowhere near as ghastly as it sounds. I had 2 and found recovery was relatively swift, not too painful and the long term side effects were minimal and non intrusive in my life.  Fingers crossed the dissection clears up the remain concerns and his recovery is easy.

  • Thank you for your reply

  • Hi Almont, yes the same happened to my husband

The Oncology team thought it may be cancer cells dieing but did a neck dissection to be safe

The neck dissection has resulted in alot of fibrous scarring but 10 years on we have our new normal and life is good

    Hope this helps

  • Hi , Thank you so much for replying. Can I ask did his lymph node pathology come back positive? Glad he’s doing ok 10 years on x

  • Hi Almont, it did in a couple of nodes (they took out 20 or so) but there was no further treatment needed. The Team were happy they'd got everything.

I was dreading walking into the recovery room, not knowing what to expect but it was fine. He healed well over all but does have some thickness and stiffness around the scar line. We see it but I doubt anyone else would notice

There are ongoing issues from the radiotherapy (dry mouth etc) but the neck dissection went well. That was a long time ago and I expect techniques have improved in that time x

  • Thank you so much , that’s really helpful and reassuring to know he’s doing fine 10 yrs on.
