I would be very grateful if anyone has any food ideas for me? My situation is that I have an open wound from a gum incision on the left side of my mouth and I have to keep food well away from it. And nothing hot. So I have to use the right side of my mouth to eat and I can't chew very much. I can swallow pretty well usually but my attempts to get down cold scrambled egg and cold mashed potato failed. So far I have managed custard, jelly, yogurt, ice cream and milk shakes without any trouble. Angel Delight and grapes were OK but I could only manage small quantities.
Fresubin is out as I am unable to drink it. Consultant has given me the instruction to not worry about the nutritional value of anything, just get as many calories down me as I can in the next few days.
Hi Margaret.
Have you tried any of the high protein pots? They're usually in mousse or a smooth texture, like custard. There's several flavours, chocolate is delicious, and I buy them from Tesco's, Home Bargains and similar outlets. They're usually around 200g and cost from 75p per pot. Ideal for a sweet tooth and a change from yoghurt.
Good luck xxx
Thanks Gill, not heard of them. I'm compiling a shopping list at the moment. Will add it on.
I might hopefully be getting somewhere because now I've heard back from the hospital and I got permission for hot scrambled egg, and I can also have luke warm soup with a straw.
Said I wished I could go with my husband to the shops to look for ideas but I still have a lot of facial bruising and swelling. They told me to try a covid mask, and it covers it perfectly. So off to the shops!

Hi Margaret. You could try mushing down Weet bix with full cream milk and add in some pureed stewed fruit plus custard all warmed up in the microwave. It should slip down fairly easily. I used to add Sustagen or Fortisip to the Weet bix to get in more calories. Here in Australia I can buy in the supermarket a breakfast drink called Up and Go that my dietician said was a good option to Fortisip It is high in calories and protein. You should have something similar in the supermarket near you. Then there are the good old smoothies where you can add anything to make it high calorie, banana, avacado, peanut butter, ice cream etc.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions, much appreciated. Update is I went to the supermarket yesterday afternoon and got loads of treats from the dessert aisle. The hospital called this morning to see how I was getting on. I told them I'd found an enormous trifle containing 750 calories. They asked if I'd managed to eat a little of it. I laughed and explained I'd scoffed the lot. I'll be having a Dietician phone review soon and I have to start writing down what I'm eating each day.
Hi Margaret,
I'm with Biker Ray. Quakers do a high protein microwavable (ready in just 2.5 mins) porrige available with different flavours. Honey was my fav. When I was at your stage earlier this year, i had one of these every morning, using full fat milk and adding a chopped up banana. I also followed this up with a Fortisip diluted with full fat milk, just to maximise my calorie intake for the morning. Dietitians thought it a very good starter for the day. And just to add, they are still a regular favourite breakfast for me.
Hope this helps and keep using those throat muscles so that soon you will be on more solid foods.

For months chocolate eclairs were my "go to" food for soothing my throat and throwing the calories in. In the end whatever works for you will almost undoubtably be good by your dietitians - and they do love a good food diary.
Thanks Peter. Great suggestion. I love chocolate eclairs, I could definitely manage one of those!
