Hi everyone

Thank you so much to everyone who replied on my last post hitting the 5 week wall. My husband is just about to start week 7 and he is feeling so ill. It feels like whatever we put in via the rig is coming up with sickness. The mucus is making him gag and even putting anything in his mouth including tooth brushing and mouthwash is leading to him being sick.
How did everyone manage this at this point in the treatment? Also how did you get your meds in? Before food, after food or during the pump feed which takes hours and hours?
As always any advice would be really appreciated xx

  • Hi. Sorry to hear how awful he is feeling.
My meds went in every two hours via tube. By rote.
I pump fed overnight so I could just forget it.

If your husband is really vomiting and dehydrated the hospital may want to admit him so pack a bag for his next RT. He has another three weeks of this.

Maybe you could afk for better antisickness?

I hope something can be sorted for him. Hugs

  • Hi,   Tell his team about the sickness, even if they have given him something for it, tell them it's not working, they will hopefully try something else. Has he tried using the RIG for over-night feeds, just have it set at a very low flow, it might give his stomach time to settle, with very little going in. I used to set mine for about 9 hours over-night, it's also better to sleep sitting up, propped up with pillows.

  • Thanks for your reply Ray. I’ll let them know at the hospital. Also I think the overnight feeds are a good idea. Probably stupid question but is the feed everything he needs as in does he still need water going in during the day?

  • Thanks Dani. You have answered my questions each time. It’s really good of you.
I think I’m going to give the team a call when he’s on his way in for rt today. Just to ask about the sickness and ask them to check in on him. He’s really struggling at the moment but doesnt want to be admitted into hospital so I’m not sure whether he’s letting them know quite how ill he feels. This is the last week of rt but everyone says the next few weeks are the toughest. It certainly feels tough and I’m not the one suffering.
    Thank you again xx

  • Sandy, he needs water too. I was told three litres which I always thought ridiculous but I tried to get at least one in.

  • Hi Sandy, so sorry to read your hubby struggling so much. As been mentioned keep talking to your medical team about the sickness and pain relief. Also my husband is now nearly 8mths post treatment, this brings back memories. The overnight feed pump made my husband very sick  so we gave up on that at some point and just relied on Ensures and Haul products, which I had to feed through his PEG more often during the day, sometimes I had to feed him that way while he was fast asleep. The sick mucus was just as hard on my husband,a spitbowl always close by. As for the meds,we got some painkillers in liquid form at some point, can't remember what they were called, I was able to feed those through his PEG. It was heartbreaking to watch my husband to go through all that,so I feel for you. All I can say is talk to your medical team, keep them informed. Keep persevering and stay strong you will get there, you are already come this far.  All my best wishes. Fellow wife Mel x

  • Yes, he will still need water, which can slowly be syringed in through his RIG.
