Husband finished treatment over a year ago for HPV positive cancer of base of tongue. He still gets quite a bit of mucus. Today it is a bit tinged with orange like blood. Does anyone still get this after this length of time or should this warrant a call to his cancer team?

  • I have just remembered he ate beetroot last night so have read that can cause a change in mucus colour.

  • Yes. When I spit, hours after a black coffee it’s still tinged brown.
Avoid beetroot for a couple of days and monitor.
Another thing you can do  is see if there is any blood on a urine dipstick. If there is then co tact his CNS to get him seen.

  • Beetroot can do that, can also give urine a red tinge which can give some of us a massive fright....

  • Hi Worrylo.

The beetroot is probably the cause, but keep an eye on it, just to be sure.  My OH is four months post RT but I need to keep alert for chest infections as his lungs are prone, due to the nature of his surgery.  A few weeks ago, I took him off to A&E as his mucous had a green colour; sure enough it was an infection and after a chest x-ray, IV and obs, he got discharged with antibiotics, which cleared it.

I'm sure your hubby will be fine, but you do right to remain vigilant.  Hugs xxx

  • My mucus is certainly coloured by whatever I have been consuming (or trying to consume).  But if the colour is still re after he has eaten other foods or you are worried, I am sure there is no harm in getting a check-up.
