Keeping the feeding tube RIG clean.

Since having the rig fitted a month ago my hubby is on his second round of antibiotics for infection. It looks so red and sore all round where the tube goes in and the silicone ring only seems to aggravate it all the more.
I’m cleaning the area with sterile water and gauze . Does anyone have any top tips please?

  • I had a PEG feeding tube for around 6 months, kept the insertion site clean with saline solution, used a sterile gauze pad between buffer and my skin, changed it twice daily, applied light covering of Sudocrem to alleviate redness.

Still had a couple of infections that needed antibiotics, seemingly no avoiding these infections, many have them

  • Good evening SandyD57e4d8, i know the RIG  is fitted differently to the PEG and for some reason they are a bit troublesome to begin with, i think its to do with the stiches. I agree with the silicone ring as some are a different shape and design, the non round ones tend to dig into the skin more and dont move as freely up the tube when the stomach expands. I have had a few infections since mine was fitted in 2010 but nothing serious, if my PEG site becomes red or a bit angry i use Sudocreme as Micky55 has suggested try not to over clean the area as i found it sometimes made it a bit sore. Hopefully your husbands RIG will settle down soon. Take care.
