Hi everyone, I finished six weeks of radiotherapy for P 16 positive SCC, on 14th March this year. Today I received the results of my PET scan. My delight at being told that the cancer was no longer present was marred somewhat by the fact that they “saw something” in my rectum (the scan was from base of brain to mid-thigh). I now have to wait for an endoscopy, which they said should come through fairly soon, but in the meantime I just wondered if anyone else had experienced anything like this? It’s such a shame because I feel that I should be delighted that I’m clear of the tonsil cancer, but I can’t feel anything but worry still. The doctor did say that he suspected it wasn’t anything nasty, but then he’s an ENT specialist!
Hi Firstly well done in getting the all clear on pet ct scan for your tonsil cancer
Concentrate on that and continue your recovery.
. Try not to worry l someone who had treatment same time as me his pet ct scan also showed an anomaly in his rectum. His oncologist also said not to worry he didn’t think it was any thing sinister but inflammation shows up on pet spct scans. Like he said it woukd be remiss if the hospital to ignore it.
. He waited a few weeks for the appointment and it was a polyp that was inflamed so a quick op sorted him. Easy for me to say don’t worry but thought you would appreciate a response.

Ah Hazel, Thank you so much for taking the time to reply, it’s incredibly reassuring to hear that tile, and I shall hang onto that and try to celebrate my recovery.
It’s a funny old thing isn’t it when you get the all clear? I’ve never considered recurrence, but when I was told today that I would be checked every 4 to 6 weeks for the first year, I immediately started to think about the fact that it might come back.
I’m sure that with time though, I will settle into believing that I’m fine! Another question for you, I know that you had auricular acupuncture to help your saliva (I can’t tell you how many times I have dipped in and out of your blog, it’s been a lifesaver!). I just wondered how long after treatment you started the Acupuncture? I’m thinking of having it, but not sure if I should leave it for a certain amount of time before doing so?
Thank you for all your support, and your replies to my posts, and also for your blog, it’s inspired me to write my own, which I hope will help people as well. Hugs xx

Hi Bridget
acupuncture I was around 6 months but that was only because I couldn’t find an acupuncturist. I would say sooner you try it the better.
im lucky i never gave reoccurrence a thought My attitude was ok ive done the hard stuff now get on with living. I had all my check ups again breezed into them. Ok i had a few follow ups once dentist didn’t like something she saw but i knew i had eaten a ryvita and it cut my gum so was infected. But like the dentist said she woukdnt be doing her job if she didnt get me seen. The other one was a cyst on my vocal cord. Oops I shouted at grandson while on holiday bad nana so I overstretched my voice. Ent consultant agreed and far as I know 4 years later it’s still ther doesn’t cause me any issues.
Appointments will get easier for you and they will get further apart as times goes on stick with us in here it may help you to help others if that makes sense. Head and neck cancers are a small part of the cancer world that’s why I and many integers stick around.

Oh yes I recall about your gum! (I had a lesion on my lip a few weeks ago, the hospital insisted on looking into it but like you, I knew it wasn’t anything sinister). I will take your advice, although I’m not a fan of herbal tea, so I’ll go for a hot chocolate instead!!! X

I actually started the Acupuncture a few weeks ago, but thought maybe I was doing it too soon as it doesn’t seem to have had any effect yet, so I was thinking about taking a break from it….. but maybe I’ll keep going, I’ve only had four sessions so far x

! You’re doing really well. Keep at it with the acupuncture. Re dry mouth its the long lasting side effect that most of us still have. I use 1/2 an xyimelt every night it gets me through the night. If I have a nap and do t use one I still wake up really dry. I look at it it’s a small price to pay to see my family grow and thrive. James our grandson was 7 when I was diagnosed he’s 14now and next month he coming to Spain with us for almost a month. Your granddaughters sound adorable enjoy every minute with them

Thanks again Hazel - yes I still use a Xylimelt at night (forgot to mention that in the blog!), and since your messages today I’ve decided to carry on with the private Acupuncture until I get an appointment through Macmillan, nothing ventured nothing gained!
i’m not sure how to link your blog to mine but I’ll give it a go when I next post (I guess it’s just a case of pasting the link in?).

I’ve decided to carry on with the private Acupuncture
I started my acupuncture around the first anniversary of my first RT
Had to look it up but from my blog
"The session lasted half an hour after taking a comprehensive history, and the needles didn’t hurt at all. By the time we had finished my nose started to run and by the time I got to the car I had a mouthful of saliva…..lots of saliva. I had to keep swallowing it! This lasted for two hours. I am overjoyed that we might just have something to build on."
How many sessions have you had and at what interval? If not often enough might have a bearing on why it's not working. Where is your practitioner placing the needles?
