Hi I’ve been diagnosed with a polymorphous adenocarcinoma and been told need an operation to remove the tumour, take out four teeth and skin graft from my thigh.   I will be in hospital for 2-3 weeks and have a tracheotomy for 5-7 days.  Will need speech and language therapy.

i just cannot cope with the diagnosis and thought of this surgery and how it is going to change my life.

I don’t want to do it.

I just can’t get my head round my diagnosis and constantly cry.

feel like my life’s been cut short and can’t see a way out.

I know there are many others who have worse diagnosis but how everyone copes is different.

fit and healthy all my life and hardly ever had a day off work.

not coping at all.

  • Take a deep breath and start again. This may seem a devastating diagnosis but you can cope and build a good life. I shall tag Lyn who has had a similar operation. She lives in Australia and might still be about but I’m sure she will get back to you later.

With luck it hasn’t so take this day by day. It’s the only way to cope with an overwhelming situation. Do you have a Maggie’s near you. They provide wonderful support if you can get there, even a chat over a cup of tea can help. Do you have family support? Getting a carer to join us here might be a good idea too.
Stay with us. We will help as much as we can.

  • Thank you.  Don’t know about maggies.

It would help if I could speak to someone has been through it as don’t know anyone.   Even though my surgeon is great it’s all a bit matter of fact as they deal with cancer day in day out.

  •    There are some threads here if that might help. You could post in a recent one and somebody should pick up

  • Thank you.   My surgeon did mention bone graft and then my OMFS said no as can live without four back teeth and that would mean taking bone from my leg.  Thinking maybe could have a bridge to hide gap - not convinced about bone graft with everything else going on !!

  • You are so kind.   I’m in Worcestershire.

  • That’s good you don’t need a graft. Have a word with your CNS about recovery. They are usually a great help while surgeons don’t seem to have the time or maybe even inclination. The tracheostomy will be temporary while the swelling post op goes down so try not to worry too much.
There is a Maggie’s in Cheltenham. Have a look at their website
