My husband needs to have laryngoscopy every 3 months then once per year post op HPV POS 16 oropharynx cancer treatment.  Has anyone experienced this after their head and neck treatment? I’m not sure what they are checking this for. Maybe due to it being unknown primary?  He has had a tonsillectomy pre treatment has had biopsies on 3 areas of the oropharynx and found nothing.  So we like some input for someone who has some knowledge about this.

  • Maybe due to it being unknown primary?

Yes that’s the most likely reason.
How is he feeling about this?

  • He doesn’t say much just takes things as they come. I’m the worrier for sure.

so what happens if they see the primary?

I think you need to ask his oncologist. If another cancer is found I would imagine surgery would be an option.

  • He has to return in 6 mos for another laryngoscope. The ent said he has to return because if that cancer were to come back it wd be in that area.  Todays visit was good, nothing seen.

  • Then try to relax till the next appointment. I know it’s difficult but his chances are excellent and you don’t want to be looking back five years from now at how you worried away and wasted the last five years
