Hi all,
My husband has just started radiotherapy following surgery for salivary gland cancer and I have seen that a few people have had positive results from using red light therapy to help with healing in the mouth etc whilst having radiotherapy.
Unfortunately our NHS hospital in Southampton don’t offer the treatment and I wondered if anyone had used or could recommend a clinic or treatment centre in Southampton that offer the treatment.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
many thanks all,
Hi Ann
I was treated at Southampton at the beginning of 2024. It is strange that they do not offer Photobiomodulation at UHS since they conducted early trials leading to NICE guidance on its use! That said I found the treatment at the hospital absolutely excellent having had chemoradiation following a number of prior surgeries. The LINAC machines they use are top quality and minimise the trauma on the mouth/throat as much as possible. I will not say it was easy but I got through it and am living a very good quality of life now.
What happens to one patient may not happen to the next. A friend who was a week behind me on a very similar treatment path had virtually no ulcers in his mouth/throat but was very sick. I was the opposite!
Fingers crossed for your husband.
If you have not found the Maggies centre yet make sure you pop in and say hi. They were a total life saver for me and especially my wife as I went through treatment.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
I have asked Thor laser who supply the PBM machines to hospitals whether the units used in private clinics are appropriate.
But Peter is right. Modern RT wherever it’s delivered is highly targeted. Most of us got by without PBM and it doesn’t make a big difference for everyone

Hi Peter,
Thank you very much for getting back to me. I thought the same with regards to the trials being held at Southampton. The team at Southampton have been great so far, I think I may have just read too much regarding the side affects and it has made me feel really anxious for my husband.
Maggies have been great too, we were able to go whilst my husband was recovering from surgery and it was a great place for my daughter (4) to visit her dad and not be overwhelmed by the hospital etc. I will keep you posted on his Journey.
Thanks again
Ann
