Pain in tongue 3 years after treatment

Hi everybody, I'm writing this time for a friend's father. He is 3 years after chemoradiation for tongue cancer (it seems to be the anterior part of the tongue) and experiences a serious pain in his tongue. It doesn't seem to be a reocurrence, as the CT is clear (biopsy inconclusive), but rather a pain due to the  nerves in the area, his doctor told him.

It goes away with painkillers, but he can't have too many, due to stomach issues. Have you ever experienced such pain? His cancer was on the anteriior part of the tongue (tip), with the pain somewhere in the middle. Does it eventually go away? Any tips on this?

Thanks a lot for any advice!

  • Hello Lelya (

I am Brian one of the Community Champions here at Macmillan. I have just noticed your post has gone unanswered. I can't answer it myself as I have a different cancer, however by me replying it will be "bumped up" to the top of the group and I hope be seen and replied to by a member of the head and neck cancer group.

I do hope you find a solution for your friend's father's issue.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Thanks Brian for bumping this.
My only thought   is that it might be neuropathic ( nerve) pain. Standard pain killers do not work but there are members here who got relief with Pregabalin. It might be worth your friend  bringing this up with their father’s consultant.

  • Thanks a lot, Beesuit, he has an appointment on Tuesday and will ask about it. Indeed, it does not seem to react to standard pain killers... have a great Easter weekend!!!
