Hi everyone,
I just wanted to say a massive thank you for all the tips and advice! I haven’t posted in a long time. I was overseas helping my dad through treatment and I wasn’t able to post for some reason. But I scoured this forum daily and it was a huge help! Thank you for all you do! Now to my question.
My dad is four months out and there has been a massive improvement. But he’s still not eating quite like normal and is having trouble gaining weight. His biggest complaints are certain foods still burning his tongue, lack of taste, and the good ol’ dry throat! I’d love to hear other peoples stories and if these things returned to normal or if this is to be his new normal.
And for everyone that is in the throws of treatment - it does get so much better and you can do this!
Thanks,
Shona
Hi Shona
Welcome back
For your dad it's just a question of time and trying out different foods
It's still early days
It was six months before I began to enjoy my food and a year before I was happy with my taste and appetite.

4 months is quite early in recovery, your dad is doing very well, taste issues vary person to person, should keep improving over the next few months as should the tongue issue and weight, has your Dad's dietitian advised on protein supplements? Dry throat is still with me 2 years on although not as bad as it was.
Hi Shona, we are not all the same, so healing doesn't have a time scale, it was about a year before I was eating anywhere near normal. It's best to try different foods to see what he can eat; it can change from week to week, he will get there, it's just a matter of time.
Ray.
Thank you! So helpful. Really appreciate it and hope you’re well! Definitely helpful to hear it’s still early days.
They haven’t advised on protein supplements! Is there something we should consider? And glad to hear it’s still early - thank you! Hope you are well.
Thanks so much, Ray! You are so right on the different foods. Thank you and hope you are keeping well!
Supplements can help stabilize weight/add weight, dietitian will advise.
I am doing well, recovery takes time, as others will tell you we embark on a new normal after treatment, we adapt.
