Hi everyone

Well I'm writing this from a very nice ward in hospital. Came in at 7am this morning for first part of my treatment neck dissection to remove lymph nodes. Was absolutely petrified but surgeon talked through things really well.

3 hours later up on ward eating ham sandwich and yoghurt which really surprised me. So far no pain just feeling abit stiff turning my head and have a drain collecting fluids . In all honesty I'm actually amazed at how I'm feeling. I do have a pretty impressive scar but who cares I'm still here and it will fad .

I've been able to eat my supper and walk to toilet etc which I really wasn't expecting to be able to do.

Thank you to all the wonderful people on here for your support in getting me this far, you are amazing people.Happy to answer any questions if anyone else is facing this.

  • Well done.

Make sure you have plenty of proper analgesia to go home with and I hope you are home soon.

  • Hi Lins

That is wonderful and so glad to hear that it was not as bad as you feared. I have had 2 neck dissections over time and have found the same as you that they were quite easy compared to some of the ops I have had. I had some changes in sensation in my neck and reduced arm movement for a short time but that all righted itself quite quickly although the sensation change remained. Best wishes on your recovery.

  • Well done that's amazing news

  • yes surgeon told me my ear might be numb and stay like it. Also said about shoulder movement and a droopy lip but so far things seem ok.

  • I would echo Dani’s advice about the analgesia.  I found that I was fine whilst in hospital following surgery, but the pain relief somehow went didn’t seem as effective once I got home.  I was prescribed some additional pain relief and things improved.  The painful stage didn’t last overly long…but it wasn’t much fun.  I too got the numb ear, but the feeling came back, albeit months later.
All the best with your recovery.

  • Gosh that's amazing, well done!

Really reassuring for anyone about to go through similar.

Best wishes for your recovery and next steps

  • Great to hear that you feel OK.

I had a neck dissection (left side) 3 weeks ago. First day and night were a bit difficult, but overall it was better than expected, just as in your case. Feeling better every day, only the stiff neck and a slight difficulty to swallow remind me of the operation.

    Get well soon!

  • thank you. they are giving me something stronger to take home with me.

  • Thank you for replying. its not been half as bad as I thought. surgeon just been round and happy with my drain so said I might be able to go home later today, which I wasn't expecting.

Im back in next wednesday to have tumour removed robotically so going to be in pain swallowing anyway.

  • I had both ear and shoulder.  It took around 18 months for my shoulder to come back to normal and I can still scratch my neck and it feels like I'm scratching the top of my ear Joy
