Hi Friends! My dad has been having issues with his stoma shrinking and now has a lary to help stretch things out. His stoma is very recessed in his throat as he has to have 2 flaps done. My question is he's getting his knickers on a knot as the lary won't fit flush against his skin therefor not a fantastic seal for speaking. Any advice would be greatly appreciated
Good evening Cleopatra_2410, i had i have been a laryngectomee since 2010 but my stoma has always remained stable so I have not used a lary tube. I know that each persons stoma is different and depends on the shape of that part of the neck and some do have trouble getting a good seal, mine is pretty flat compared to others. I cannot speak as the speech valve did not work maybe if you or your dad contact Atos laryngectomy supplies they might be able to offer a suitable product that could help out. Maybe you are talking about the esophagus shrinking as i know people who have it stretched ( dilatation of the esophagus) so swallowing is better which can also affect speech. Sorry, i cannot be more help but i hope your dad manages to get it sorted as i expect it can be quite frustrating. Take care.
Chris x
Thank you! I'll pass this on. I'm having a look at lary clips and attempting a wee Heath Robinson with micropore tape! I think the frustration is the worst though!
