Anyone with experience of this

Really sorry to ask.  But can someone talk me through what I can expect to happen at a dental extraction appointment post radiotherapy?  I have asked the hospital but have not got any answers and my appointment is this week coming.  I’ve asked in person and also via email. I would like to know if I can expect to be given antibiotics.  And if so for how long. If I can expect to have the wound stitched.  If anyone had Pentoclo could you tell me how it was given eg did you start it before and for how many weeks after.  (Thanks Dani for the advice on this.  Again I’ve asked and not heard back). Did you have any information beforehand? Did you have a pre appointment? I’ve just been given an appointment for the extraction and no further information and no replies to my requests.  I’m worried they’re just going to take the tooth out without any preventative measures.  I’m sure it will be fine, I’d just like to hear about others’ experiences.
Really appreciate any help I can get.  What I’d really like is a walk through of the appointment.

  • Hi Poppy. Can you remind me which tooth?
Also at less than two years after RT your ORN risk is low.
Edit. I’ve found your post. It’s in the line of fire

I had one out almost in the line of fire. I didn’t get antibiotics and I healed well albeit it took a little longer

  • Thanks Dani.  I’m just short of 2 years.  I’ve been on the waiting list for the extraction for 10 months. I didn’t realise until I read your other post about having it earlier the better.  Did you have the wound stitched up?

  •  Did you have the wound stitched up?

    No.

I must say the worst bit was the anaesthetic but they got the tooth out in about a second. No messing. I was concerned as I was past my two years but it was fine. ORN is a risk we all live with but actually that risk is still small. I have a friend whose husband has just had implants done four years down the line after the hospital took out all his  molars pre RT.

  • Hi both.   I may be heading for an extraction also.   I have a deep pocket behind my lower back molar.  I have a great dentist who is keeping everything clean and putting in a periodontal chip every 2 months.  I use a salt water syringe in the pocket after eating ( every time) and take extra care etc etc etc.  I have had a fair few gum infections in that area and it is deteriorating, probably  heading towards an extraction at some point.
All my other teeth are fine and I can easily manage the cleaning, fluoride etc etc.

For all newbies here I am now 3 1/2 years past treatment and feel very good and doing well.  This back tooth is a real nuisance and potentially a big problem

best wishes to all.  Lizzie x

Is it the hospital managing this?

  • Hi Dani

my consultant is aware of everything.  I have double checked with him all the way through and he looks at it each time.  I am on 4 monthly visits now at the Marsden.
    why do you ask?

  • why do you ask?

    Hi Liz

I was curious to know whether the tooth was being managed by your own dentist or the hospital one. I might have expected the hospital to have git that tooth out ages ago. It seems an awful lot of work and inconvenience for you. But that’s just my thought.

  • Hi Dani

i agree it is a great deal of worry and work.   I am scared to go on holiday because it could all flare up etc.  even if I go out for the day I am always doing my teeth etc

trouble is I am so scared of ORN   The hospital dentist is not overly helpful and is very abrupt   I have seen her several times with this tooth but she is so difficult to deal with   She put my chances of getting ORN at around 10 %    She hasn’t said to remove tooth yet  but my oncologist has said that maybe she should look again soon

i really wish it had been removed before treatment started

I spend my whole time obsessing about it   I know that sounds bit stupid    I really dont know what to do for the best

    any advice welcome

I sympathise. We have enough to worry with recovery let alone this sword of Damocles that’s been left dangling over your head.

I would find it hard to fight it all the time so would get it out and insist on PENTO as a back up.
It must be pretty loose by now, surely?

The hospital dentist is not overly helpful and is very abrupt

That’s a pity, considering she must deal with oncology patients all the time
