Mucus

Hello again,

So husband has tonsil cancer and is now in week 5 out of 6 radiotherapy and chemotherapy.  In the last week - he wakes up nearly every hour trying to clear his throat of mucus.  Anyone have any good ideas of relieving this?  He sounds like a wounded animal in the bathroom, and on the drive to the hospital, I have to make many stops along the way so he can 'honk' it up.

He spoke to the radiologist yesterday and she only said that the anti sickness tables are good for stopping the 'gag' - but these aren't really any help.

Obviously he is trying to sip water but not much is going through.

Thank you for any advice that you may be able to give :)

  • Hi. I used to steam with a towel wrapped round my head. Some folk here found a nebuliser better. They are cheap enough from Amazon. A humidifier next to the bed can be useful. If none of this helps some trusts use a drug called carbocysteine which thins the mucous

I used to keep kitchen roll by the bed and a paper bag on the floor to throw the tissues in. I could do it in my sleep almost. In the day, just like your husband I just spat a lot and sipped water. Even better was something fizzy like spring water or diet ginger ale.

  • Hello there, I feel for you,my husband is in 5th week after treatment, and he's still struggling with the same, I got him a nebuliser, but he is also gargling with cooled down salty water, suggested by the dentist who checked on a tooth that got taken out prior start of treatment, the sickness pills didn't do any thing for my husband either, not sure about your husband being dehydrated? We got told to drink plenty of water and still try to sip as much as you can, even if it hurts. Most if all, alot of patience is needed. All the best. Melanie
