Lump in jaw after radiotherapy

Hi all my dad had tonsil cancer and 2 lymph nodes they caught very early. He had 2 rounds of chemo and 30days radiation. He finished 8 weeks again and most things are good just the eating as still painful, but yesterday he noticed a lump on his lower jaw the same side as the cancer, it’s tender not sore. He went to the dentist today and it’s not anything dental. He has called his cancer doctor to speak about this. I was just wondering if this has happened to anyone else as we are both really scared.

  • We do all get lumps and bumps after treatment.  It is unlikely that there will be a return of cancer that quickly.  The radiation does funny things to us, sometimes weeks or months after finishing treatment.  He has done the right thing by getting it checked out.  I have never found my cancer team anything but kind and efficient if I called in with a concern.

  • Thank you so much for your reply, he is hoping for a call back today or tomorrow from Cancer team. Is so scary. He has the full PET scan I  January to see if the radiation had worked so this has thrown us. Thank you again

  • Hi Hayes

Treatment is very challenging, infections happen and are worrying, lymphedemas appear and also worry us.... hopefully oncology team will be able to put your mind at rest.

  • Good evening Hayes83, i agree with PFJTHS about lumps and bumps appearing, also it does sound very early for cancer to return Well done in getting it checked and calling your dad's consultant as I'm sure they will see you a.s.a.p, mainly because of your dads' recent treatment. I still have a small lump in my neck which appeared after my first surgery/treatment, it cannot be seen but i can feel it , it's about the size of a pea and was checked 12 years ago so hopefully this is the same with your dad. We all have periods of worry when something does not feel right and in most cases its nothing sinister. Wishing you and your dad all the best, take care.

  • Thank you so much for reply. I looked again today and it is 2cm up from where is cancer was so I hope that is just swollen lymph nodes or something and would of thought the radiation would of killed but still such a worry hopefully he gets seen soon.
    glad you are well
