Cough and Mucus

Hi, any advice on easing of mucus please? My partner has started coughing up mucus and it’s to the point where he is sick as it is getting stuck in his throat. Thank you.

  • Hi Sunshine.

All these helped me. Tiny sips of water, fizzy spring water, diet ginger ale, steaming my head over a bowl of hot water with a towel wrapped round my head, pulling it out with my fingers (yuk sorry......or you can buy little sponges on sticks from pharmacy or Amazon). I did a lot of hawking and spitting and kept a kitchen roll by my bedside. I got to do it in my sleep looking at the amount dropped on the floor in the morning.

Others here have used a nebuliser, through the day. Some were lucky to get one from the hospital but most had to buy one. They are cheap enough.

I tried a humidifier in the bedroom but apart from steaming up the windows it really didn't do much for me. Lots of people here swore by them. You can only try.

Finally I know a few who got a mucolytic drug called carbocysteine from their GP

It's relentless and it's because the water part of his saliva is being destroyed by the RT, leaving the mucous fraction of it alone. Mine stopped practically overnight at around 12 weeks

Hope some of this gives you food for thought

  • Thank you Dani. That is very helpful. Yes his is mostly in the middle of the night. I will start with the bowl of hot water and go from there. Thanks again Blush

  • Sleeping upright supported by a V-shaped pillow was helpful....Caphosol also helped ..  keeping a sick bowl handy is unfortunately a must

  • I remember the mucus and intense salty taste well, the good news is that it really does go eventually.

I used to take frequent sips of water, but later on when i had less mouth pain (put still tonnes of mucus and a lot of dry throat issues) i used to take pastilles that helped with producing saliva.

I also slept on a v shape pillow support which helped.
