Hi friends! My dad is going in for The Big Op soon and I'm wondering about a bandana or a snood to cover it to give him more confidence. Any recommendations? I've seen something on an eczema website but not sure about pulling it over his neck as there's no buttons or velcro. Any tips welcome xx

bandana or a snood to cover it
I know my husband many years ago had a cover provided by the hospital while healing took place but it was many years ago and things have likely moved on. I’ve tagged our three other community champs who are all Larys. I’m sure one of them will be along soon

Good evening, Cleopatra_2410. When I had my laryngectomy, I started with a Buccanan bib ( i suppose its a bit like a bandana), a bit like a baby bib but made of a spongey mesh material. They come in different colours and can either be Velcro or a drawstring method, which I found to be better, they can be washed several times after losing their air-filtering ability. I then moved on to the stick-on baseplate where you can attach the filters (HMEs) which are designed to condition the air, these are the most common stoma covers nowadays. You can see these products on the Atos laryngectomy supplies website. I also wear a foam filter to give the stoma area a break from the baseplates. Please let us know if you need more information. I tried to upload photos but not sure how to do it. Wishing you and your dad all the best, take care.

Hi
It depends on what he is having they now discharge with the baseplate and HME filter fitted and I can’t stand having my stoma covered up for breathing reason I would urge you speak with the Speech Therapist and they will supply him with a specific cover bib as Chris has described
Once he is established his supplies company will have various options for him if he wants anything
Hope all goes well
Tony
