Hi everyone,
Just completed my 2nd week of RT. This week I have very sore gums and dry mouth. I have been able to eat a bacon sandwich every morning with tom sauce on up until this morning. My lovely bacon sandwich now tastes of zero has texture of cardboard and hurts my sore gums!! My black coffee is still able to break through ,but I doubt for much longer !!! The lovely nurses at RT have prescribed me spray Difflam for those troublesome ulcers in the night ,mouth wash for through the day , I was given some gelclair yesterday to try if helps will prescribe next week . And also on bioxtra mouth wash .
Pain meds so far just soluble paracetamol, but I think that will soon be assisted by something else !! Dr rang last night to let me know I have picked up ecoli infection in gut ( after stool sample supplied) no treatment but just use my own bathroom until it goes,!!
On the positive my RIG infection is clearing up well now ,so I can move a lot easier without wincing !!
Thanks for listening
Mark xx
Hi Mark. That timeline is about right.
I had Gelclair, Difflam and Caphosol.
Somebody recommended coconut oil to me but long after I needed it. It might be worth trying A teaspoon or so swirled around your mouth for a few minutes then spit.
Soluble aspirin used the same way did help me.
Keep going

What an excellent title for a thread Mark, but I'm sorry to hear your relationship with bacon sandwiches has become temporarily platonic, it'll be back to carnal lust before you know it!
All about par for the course I'm afraid, soluble aspirin was marvellous for me, especially when I couldn't swallow tablets. I think Dani's covered the usual suspects medication wise....very best of luck with everything.
Metastatic SCC diagnosed 8th October 2013. Modified radical neck dissection November, thirty-five radiotherapy fractions with 2xCisplatin chemo Jan/Feb 2014. Recurrence on larynx diagnosed July 2020 so salvage laryngectomy in September 2020.
I have picked up ecoli infection in gut
Oh, Mark, it never rains but it pours eh? poor you, I hope it clears up soon!
On the positive my RIG infection is clearing up well now
So pleased at least your RIG infection is clearing, you certainly have had it rough.
bacon sandwich now tastes of zero has texture of cardboard and hurts my sore gums!!
. . . and that is just a true tragedy!! I love a good bacon butty with tomato sauce. I do hope your taste improves quickly after your treatments have finished. Thinking of you. Take care.

Hi Spider! I too just finished week 2 of 2X day RT. Back of throat (my poor uvula is gone! - cells invaded the poor thing), "Fred" the tumor is on my left side maybe jawline over? and getting "zapped" also in my lymphs for extra measures as it's getting the edges of what could be.
Sorry to hear about your bacon sammy. I'm from the US and LOVE my "toasted cheese".. lol ~ I think you call them 'toasties'. Tomato sauce sounds weird but we do tomato soup to dip them in. I still have taste but tomato & spices, which I love, are a bit ouchie.. I have mouth rinse for the ulcers and "Magic Mouth" (diphenhydrAMINE) which has a numbing agent.
We can do this!
HubMark Just concurring what the others have said the love of food can go overnight in my case it was dayb7 of radiotherapy bi went from happily eating tea t( day before to bang I couldnt get my lamb casserole down ni matter how I tried. Soluble aspirin swirled round and spat out helped a little p. By end if week 3 I was using my ng tube for everything whilst managing to about sip water. I a years time it will all be like a bad dream. I also started on cocodomol and oramorph Good luck for this week.
