Ulcer in mouth...scared

I have been referred by my dentist as I have a mouth ulcer that hasn't gone away.  It is small, white and on my upper palate just above my teeth. It doesn't hurt.

I am terrified. I have just booked a holiday for next summer,  taken out holiday insurance not thinking a mouth ulcer could be cancerous.

  • Hi Claraclock, welcome.  Don't panic just yet, it may be nothing, hopefully that will be the case for you.  If it isn't and your worse fears are confirmed then the good news is this type of cancer has a great cure rate of 90%.  There are a great number of helpful and caring people on here who have been through it and come out the other side and are enjoying a great life post treatment.

I, myself have just started the 'journey' and have found great comfort and support from the good people on here and you will too.

    Sending hugs

  • Thank you for replying.

I will tell the insurance company.  My ulcer is so well hidden I could feel with my tongue there was something strange up there  but never expected this.  An emergency referral....it scares me  so much.

  • Hi Claralock, try not to worry (easier said than done I know). It could be anything other than cancer; it is said that 90% of referrals are nothing to worry about, even if it is, the cure rates for head and neck cancers are very high. Until you have been to the ENT, I wouldn't tell to tell your insurance.

  • Thanks for the reassurance Old biker.  I have had breast cancer scares but found out about them as I checked myself  and had a lump removed . I had no idea about this mouth ulcer and my dentist has been so quick to refer me...I am in absolute shock and worry.

As for insurance I have just taken out a new policy...less than a week. Holiday booked for next summer.

    Hi

I’ll echo what Ray said. Most referrals aren’t cancer. So hold onto that. If you haven’t had an appointment through in two weeks you need to push it. Best of luck.

  • Thank you  Dani

I will phone next week as the postal service here is  slow.

  • You will need to tell your insurance company whichever way the investigation goes.  I would do it once you know what the results are.  If you booked and purchased insurance before you knew of the issue i.e the dental referal you should be covered by the insurance for cancellation or, hopefully, throughout the holiday.

Well over 80% of 2 week wait (emergency) referals turn out to be totally unconnected with cancer so there is a great chance it is something else.  If it is cancer then we are here to help you navigate through your journey.

  • Good evening, Claraclock. It's good that your dentist has referred you to see a consultant in the Maxillofacial department. Try not to worry until you have been seen. Hopefully, it will be about two weeks. If not, take Danis's advice and chase it up. My ulcer was on my lower jaw/floor of the mouth area, hopefully, its nothing to worry about but be assured that the cure rates are high for head and neck cancers. Please do not worry about your holiday until you know the outcome, wishing you all the best with your appointment, take care.

  • Hello Claraclock

I am in exactly the same position as you as of Thursday.  Dentist has referred me due to a very small ulcer on the side of my tongue.  I was vaguely aware it was there but it wasn't bothering me so I thought nothing of it.  Scared now.  Awaiting appointment.  I hope it turns out to be nothing, both for you and for me.

  • Hello Annachbuie

Fingers crossed that we get seen very soon and it is nothing.

I am struggling mentally with this and keep bursting into tears. Just want to be seen and know what is going on
