Are these symptoms normal?

Today is my 7th day after my neck dissection surgery and the pain seems worse today than ever.  I have jaw pain, tongue pain, throbbing at the site and ear ache besides the throat pain from them taking more tonsil tissue.  I just wondered if this was all normal, only when I had my first surgery which was for a Tonsillectomy only it was well on the road to recovery after 7 days, yes, of course, it was still sore to swallow but not like today. I have been taking my pain meds regularly as prescribed, but they aren't helping tremendously.  Only my surgeon told me that the pain shouldn't be much worse than when I had the Tonsillectomy, but it is?

Thanks

  • Hi Hazel. What analgesia are you on?

It seems like you should contact the hospital in case you have an infection

  • Hi Hazel

I have had 2 neck dissections over time and the recovery was fairly quick with none of the side effects you have mentioned. As Dani has suggested get in touch with your surgeon to get it checked. An infection is a possibility and he will be able to tell you.

  • Hi Hazel,

Always seek professional advice, but I would guess most of the pain is from where they took more tonsil tissue.  I've had 3 "goes" at my tonsils.  2 tonsillectomies and once when they scratched the area with the tube during a different operation.  That hurt as much as a tonsillectomy.  The whole area is very sensitive after tonsillectomies and remain so for a long time.

If it is your tonsil area then another day or so and it should start to settle down.

Up until yesterday, I was having Oramorph and Paracetamol regularly.  It seems a little better today than it did yesterday, so I will see how it goes tomorrow and if it worsens or doesn't feel any better then I will get on to them.

    Thanks

  • Hi Lyn,  as I told Dani, it does feel a little better today, so I will see how it is tomorrow and if it worsens, or feels no better, I will get in touch with them.

    Thanks

  • Hi Hazel

it’s so tricky to know where the pain is coming from. I had surgery on my tongue and tonsils as well as neck disection. I felt the neck disection was the easier part. I did have ear ache after surgery and still have it on and off it will be a year in November. My surgeon said it’s from nerves repairing.  My jaw was also painful like I had dental work felt bruised. But I had so much other stuff going on with the other surgeries.  My neck was numb for quite a while as well. If you’ve got a good team you can contact then it doesn’t hurt to ask them. It’s tricky to know whats normal and what’s not.

Thanks Natalie!  Yes, I know that not everyone is going to have exactly the same experience, but to hear that you are not alone in some of it helps enormously!  I will see what it's like tomorrow (Day 9 after surgery) and i it's still no better I will try to ring and ask (they are difficult to get hold of.)

    Thanks again
