Silicone adhesive orbital implant

My surgery was 12 yr ago (see my profile) and I lost my eye due to radiotherapy damage a year later. I had a coral implant inserted at that time and since then wore a prosthesis. Due to further damage of my eyelids it is no longer stable, is painful and falls out repeatedly. I’ve known this was likely to happen for a long time and eyelid reconstruction surgery was planned. However recent scans identified skull base problems due to osteomyelitis/osteoradionecrosis which is still being investigated / treated. Due to this I was told today that surgery was no longer an option (I understand the reasons for this) and suggested management was a silicone adhesive prosthesis. I would welcome comments and advice from anyone who has experienced this.

  • Hi Lochaberlass

So sorry to hear of the complications 12 years after surgery. After all this time you would hope to have got away with it but unfortunately sometimes our life saving ops can have unwanted side effects. I had a different cancer to yours (jaw cancer) so have not experienced your issue but do hope that someone on the forum can help you. The silicone adhesive prosthesis sounds like a good alternative. I had to have an alternative to upper jaw reconstruction as a bone graft had a high chance of failure so like you had to have something different that was not the norm. However this has worked out well for me so I have my fingers crossed that the silicone prosthesis works out well for you too.

  • Hi Lochaberlass They are not going to recommend it if its rubbish and more than likely tried and tested , All the best minmax

  • Sophie, Thank you so much for your encouragement. I have just read your profile and feel completely humbled by your positive attitude to all the major problems you have endured. What difficult decisions you have had to take. I do hope things become a little easier for you. You have reminded me I’ve had 12 really good years, and what I’m experiencing is a very minor visual change compared to that you are living with. Thank you so much.

  • Thank you Minmax.

  • Hi Lochaberlass They managed to remove part of neck and shoulder and stick my leg in my neck so I dont think you will be having any issues All the Best minmax

  • Good evening Lochaberlass, i have not experienced this but have had three major operations involving skin grafts, reconstruction, and removal of my voicebox, my last operation was in 2010, thankfully everything has behaved itself with no further issues. I know that technology in treating cancer and the side effects has improved since my last operation so hopefully their suggestion gives you some comfort and relief, wishing you all the best, take care.
