Hi everyone
Hubby finally rings the bell on friday.. So excited but yet very very anxious as we been told he wont have a scan for 4 months to see if clear or still there. Velindra will be phoning us once a week for two weeks but then we on own. Do we not see anyone in the recovery stage.
This really concerns me as this week hubby has been very unwell. Got yet another infection and is feeling the radiotherapy stronger.
Can anyone advice what to expect.
Thankyou xxx.
Hi Cazza.
Well done Mr Cazza
The last week of RT is a prelude to the two or three worse weeks afterwards. It's awful but all you can do is take the pain killers and food and hunker down. I slept a lot of the time in the first two weeks afterwards.
My first appointment was six weeks afterwards and then another at 12 when I had an MRI and a PET at 16. In my first year my check ups were every six weeks. I had access to my CNS in between if I needed her.
Your husbands GP should be able to manage these infections without going back to the oncologist. Do use the service. Mine were really helpful.
I was beginning to feel part of the world again at six weeks and I definitely turned a corner at 12. My NG tube came out at 8 weeks and by then I could eat soft foods but couldnt taste them. I was on morphine till 12, coming off gradually in the following 2 weeks.
By four weeks after treatment end I got a really horrid sticky mouth with thick saliva that I had to spit out . This is normal and happens because the RT reduces the thin water constituent leaving just the mucous. It does go, leaving a dry mouth, but takes a few weeks
Recovery is just a case of hunkering down and being kind to yourself
Best wishes
Dani

Hi Cazza
You are not completely abandoned after treatment. I saw my consultant every 3 months for for the first year and he then he started to spread it out a bit more. I saw him regularly for 5 years. I also saw my radiology doctor every 3 months so between them both if there were any issues I could get on top of them fairly quickly.
Wishing you and your husband all the best for his recovery.
