Taste and smell

Hi everyone, my husband is 2 weeks into radiotherapy and had one chemo last week. He says he hs terrible taste in his mouth and he is finding some foods taste strange already. Today he is also smelling something weird, he can’t seem to explain except to say it smells ‘machine like’? Just wondering if anyone can tell me if this is quite a normal side effect and any tips to combat the foul taste or what foods would possibly taste ok? He’s always had a very big appetite and loves his food so this is going to be a difficult journey and I’m already worrying about how this will affect him with regard to weight loss. Thank you.

  • Hi Shazzle , my hubby was exactly the same and he only had radiotherapy. He struggled with taste for a long time but all i can say is it will get better. Wishing you both all the best xxx

  • Hi   like Bridget's husband I had only RT and that severely affected my taste for some months. The metallic taste is down to the chemo which is platinum, a metal. Avoiding metal cutlery is supposed to help and sucking mint or citrus sugar free sweets can mask the taste. You can sweeten food if it tastes bitter or if too salty adding lemon juice counteracts that. By week 4 I was feeding by NG tube and getting all my calories at night by pump. I lost very little weight. I think he has to understand that things will get worse for a while and just go with the flow. Has he a stomach tube? I didn't have a pre placed PEG but it's fairly standard. It ensures you get enough food in to cope with the treatment and speed recovery.

    Best wishes

  • Thank you Bridget,

I hope your hubby is recovering well xx

  • Hi yes the metallic taste is par for the course. I used to get a but I g smell when  in the car . As for taste mine went the other way everythjng was exaggerated. Best advise is if he dan swallow just forget about food giving any pleasure hard to do but it’s onky way. If he’s a peg whrn ge dsnt get enough hydration or nutrition use it. My ng tube was my life saver ftom week 4 treatment tk week 3 recovery. It helped me recover fairly quickly. Read blog below it might help.

    Hi Shazzle

    T2N1M0 tonsil cancer HPV16+

I finished Chemoradio in June...taste went completely out of the window.

Taste is gradually coming back ....slow process....now about 60-70%.....different for all.

  • Hi Shazzle, sorry to hear about your husband however this is par for the course it seems and it may get even worse. As my treatment progressed even a drink of water tasted foul and that combined with loss of appetite and nausea resulted in a lot of weight loss. I was totally reliant on my RIG tube for my Fortisips and liquids.
Stick with it and his taste and appetite will return but maybe will not be quite the same.

Wishing him all the best with his treatment.
