Neck lump- did yours go away with treatment - update

Just want to start by saying thanks so much to everyone who reassured me this week when me husband went to to A& E with a fever. Thankfully his white blood count was ok and he resumed radiotherapy the next day. We are hurtling towards the end of week 2 of treatment. His neck lump is very large and the oncologist told us to not be alarmed if it didn’t shrink. Just wondering if anyone had a very lump that did disappear and at what stage. Thanks so much for everyone’s continued support.

  • Hi I didn’t have any nodal spread but there are lots of posts here where people describe there nodes still there after treatment end so try not to worry. Xx

  • Thanks Dani. Also I have noticed that some people mention that their oncologist/radiographer comment on how the tumour is responding to treatment as they go along. We asked oncologist but she just said they won’t know anything until 3 months post treatment. I’m just worried that they don’t think it is responding,

They won’t know till the scan. Anything else is a guess. Yes some teams tell their patients they are doing very well. We do need that pat on the back, after all
Try not to read stuff into what’s said that isn’t there.

  • Thanks Dani. I really appreciate you replying and calming me down.

  • Hi 2 weeks us reslky early into treatment lije Dani says there’s  lots whose lumps didn’t go down si don’t worry   . Larry the lymph lump that I called mine didn't go down until week 5 for me. Some oncologist s comment some don't. Likewise some  have  a great rapport with patients and some  hardly speak. All  I will say is trust the treatments, they do it day in and day out. It’s extremely rare for our treatment to fail take heart from that along with many of us in here.
Glad he got sorted with temperature

  • My lump was pretty big and got bigger just before treatment. My team said the same about not being alarmed. It got a lot smaller but could still feel it for a good 6-8 weeks after treatment.  Can't see or feel anything there now but the node is getting smaller and hopefully what's there is just some dead/dying cells.

  • My oncologist told me mine was responding during treatment.  The RT machine I was in did a positioning CT scan before each treatment and they could see the tumour.  They once showed me the scan as part of a weekly review.  I guess it depends on the RT machine and it's capabilities as to if they can get sufficient information to make judgements.  Maybe different manufacturers machines have different capabilities??

That said the 3 month post treatment scans are the definitive answer

  • Hi, I had a tumour not swollen lymph and it was 4cm in size. They had me on 3 chemo treatments first to reduce it before starting chemo/radiation.  First chemo at week three it started to reduce. Second a lot more and by three almost gone. Radiation too care of the rest

  • Hi All. My husband has nearly finished week 5. We saw his oncologist on Wednesday. She mentioned that he might need a neck dissection after he finishes radiotherapy as the lump is still pretty big. This has filled us both with despair. Does this mean that the cancer is still active if it doesn’t go down? It is HPV positive and he had his second dose of chemo ( 1 week delayed) on Tuesday. Has anyone else had this experience?

  • They might well make this decision after his PET. Lots of people have enlarged nodes after treatment. They can sometimes take ages to go down. Can you get your CNS to clarify?
