Hi All - before I ask for advice I just want to say how comforting it is to read The Macmillan. Always come here when days are not so happy. Anyway I am now 8 weeks post radiotherapy treatment and moving forward slowly. I seem to be struggling quite a lot lately with the dry mouth problem.  Any suggestions for a magical relief.

  • I'll put that in my basket too 111

  •  I was given that

    See what it tastes like

The major ingredient is mucin ( the stuff that makes your saliva slippery) derived from pigs’ stomach  to me it tasted of pork. Horrid

  • Hello, I am 12 weeks post treatment snd can now swallow with no pain but the lack of saliva is making eating almost impossible and I’m struggling with everything unless it’s smothered in gravy. Nauseated face Do you have any suggestions what I might be able to eat as everything is just sticking to the roof of my mouth. It’s very depressing.

  • Glad to hear gum is helping. Can I ask what you ate after treatment as I’m finding everything impossible. Meal times are very stressful for me and it’s getting me down.

  • it is what it is I'm afraid.. I usually have to have 2 cups of tea whenever I have something to eat.. mouthful of food, chew a bit, sip of tea, chew a bit more, swallow.. yeah, not ideal but it gets the job done.. I was joking to my wife about having 0% beer on my cornflakes.. lol..  hey, you never know.. Grinning

  • Thanks for replying. Drink tea with food too but was hoping for any suggestions as to what might be easy to eat for some. Just tried a small piece of lasagne but was like eating wallpaper paste ( not that I’ve tried that ).

  • Try poached eggs, tinned peaches, avocado, banana and peanut butter smoothie made with ice cream, supermarket trifles and mousses, tinned rice, ready brek made with milk with cream added.
Slow cooked lamb is a good meat to eat as it’s tender.
sip a tiny bit of warm tea to act as a proxy saliva.
Acupuncture helped my saliva along ( see my blog)  as did cheering sugar free gum.

  • Hi Jerry

I find that I have to keep my food as moist as possible otherwise it doesn't want to go down. I use Fortisip a lot to moisten sweet food to make it more slippery. For instance I moisten weet bix with hot water and Fortisip and add pureed tinned fruit and add a bit of custard or moisten a slice of sponge cake with Fortisip and add pureed fruit and yoghurt. You can leave  lumps in to make the chewing and swallowing work for it's living. If you don't want to use Fortisip moisten with milk. I make different soups to the texture I want using more or less stock and get to the texture I want. I thicken with cornflour if it is too thin. You can again leave as many lumps in as you want to get the texture you want. I find it is nice and moist and much easier to swallow.

You try tuna mornay as that is nice and moist but has texture in it to make the chew and swallow work.

  • Thanks Lyn,

I manage weetabix eith full fat milk no problem, though it gets very repetitive snd im getting sick of it very quickly. I also manage perhaps a fried egg or boiled egg sandwich, so long as the egg is runny. The swallowing of food isn’t a problem at all. It’s just that I have no saliva so the food is just sticking to my mouth. It’s just awful.

    Thanks again,

    Lee.

  • hi, I find Salivax pastilles good, I get them on prescription. My husband who has recently had a laryngectomy suffered a lot with dry mouth got a spray from his doctor on prescription.
