I am so sorry I feel like I’m posting all the time but I feel like this is the best place to get support  right now. My husband was diagnosed with cancer at the base of his tongue 2 weeks ago. He is starting radiotherapy and 2 doses of chemo on 4th March. When we met his oncologist and surgeon we felt quite rushed. I read quite often that people have surgery on the primary tumour and also a neck dissection. My husband has a very large lymph swelling on his neck too. This option wasn’t offered and I’m now wondering if we should have asked why. Is it worth getting a second opinion? My husbands surgeon did say at one point that they may might do a neck dissection but then it wasn’t mentioned again. Once again sorry for questions I just want to make sure that my husband is getting the very best care and we don’t regret exploring all avenues.

  • Hi again. My cancer wasn’t operable either. Six weeks of RT fixed it

Have a look at   profile here and her blog.
She had lymph nodes affected in her neck but she didn’t have a dissection either. She is cured and so am I

For me, I’d be pretty pleased neck surgery wasn’t on the menu.

Where is he being treated ? Neck dissection used to be routine. Many centres are abandoning it with modern targeted radiotherapy at their fingertips.

  • Hi Worrylo, don't apologize for posting, post as often as you want to. There are lots of people on here who didn't have surgery, for one reason or another, so it's not uncommon, not to have surgery. Next time you see the team, you could ask  why none has been offered, I'm sure they will be happy to explain.  Good luck with his treatment.

    Ray.

  • Hi there.  I was treated at the Marsden for base of tongue cancer plus 2 lymph nodes.  I  had 2x chemo plus 6 weeks radiotherapy.  I am nearly 2 1/2 years post now.  I did not have surgery.  Hope that helps.  Best wishes.  Lizzie

  • Hello, I'm another one who didn't have surgery. Is his cancer HPV related? (you can put diagnosis etc in your profile to save repeating). If it is, chemoRT is likely to sort it. The treatment is tough but effective.  Good luck to you both!

  • Hi Worrylo,

I didn’t have surgery either. SCC of the right tonsil. T3 N1 M0. HPV +.  I was told my tumour was too big.  I had 2x Cisplatin and 33 radiotherapy sessions in Spring 23.   I currently have no evidence of disease and recovery is going in the right direction. However if you’re worried you can always reach out to your cns nurse.  Good luck.  I hope you find your answer.
