It’s been a while since I’ve posted. Wow, happy new year. I think I’ll write off 2023 as never happening. I was diagnosed in December 2022 and 2023 has just been a shitstorm but I’m here to tell the tale and reflect. It’s 1am and I’ve managed to celebrate new year with a few rum and cokes which I can actually taste. Xmas lunch tasted of sawdust and I bloody cooked it for the whole family but its great just to be alongside my children. Little moments have become big ones, I don’t think I’ll ever shake off my new fear of life and death. The world is so different now only you guys will know what I mean. I’m very scared of the future but for now I’m recovering well , I feel pretty good, I’ve got an accidental six pack and I try to enjoy every day and forget the hand I was dealt last year. I asked Santa for more saliva but he didn’t come through. Anyway I’m feeling sentimental, reflective but also optimistic. Sorry for the midnight ramble of nothing but please all just keep going and enjoy what you can. Love to you all. Alex
Hi Alex
Happy New Year to you. I am sure that 2024 will be much more positive for you as you have been through a tough time. Having cancer does make you much more appreciative of all the things that life offers whether big or small. Take it one day at a time and you will get there. Congratulations on cooking the Christmas lunch. I am sure that Christmas 2024 will be a whole new ball game and you will be able to taste things as they should taste. I remember during radio a few years ago watching everyone eating their Christmas lunch while I was trying to eat a few mouthfuls of pureed food with my mouth being so painful and like you it tasting like sawdust. The following Christmas was another story and much more enjoyable.
Congratulations on the six pack that is a real achievement.

Alex....You've cracked it
I'm really touched that you thought of all of us here at the beginning of the new year

Happy 2024 Alex! Glad to hear you're recovering. You've come through and this should be a better year. I know what you mean about the fear, it never quite leaves you but I also have a new appreciation of life and less fear about trying new things. One life live it as Hazel on here wisely says! Sending love

Everyone on here has one of these years and you are right in saying no one truly understands what we go through, we all have our ways of coping and recovering so its great to read your post. It sounds to me as if you are doing a great job, this time next year you will be enjoying your Christmas dinner along with the rest of your family, wishing you all the best for 2024, Alex. Take care.

Happy new year Alex!
Your xmas dinner and experience sounded like my own experience in 2020 and like you i lost a lot of weight.
Three years later i need to diet as i have rediscovered my love for indian takeaways and roast dinners and am unfortunately overweight again.
Each year it will get a bit easier until you are pretty close to normal again (i still find thick sarnies a bit dry)
Lots of what you say rings true, in particular it makes us consider what is important
Hope you continue to recover well and that 2024 is a brill one for you.
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
We’re here to provide physical, financial and emotional support.
