Urgent 2WW Referral

Hi all,

I was just hoping for some advice / help knowing what to expect at my urgent ENT appointment next week please?

I’ve been struggling with a hoarse voice for about two months now. It initially came on after a cold so it was assumed to be laryngitis.
two courses of antibiotics later/voice rest  and nothing has helped, I’ve been having ear aches and general feeling of being unwell since I got sick around two months back so my GP has sent me for an urgent 2WW.

she initially said she it isn’t likely to about it being malignant due to my age (under 30) and being a non smoker / drinker but suggested putting it through & the ENT agreed with it needing to be urgent…

I'm very anxious about it and don’t really know what to expect. Any advice would be really welcomed.

thank you all & best wishes

  • Hi The 2 week pathway is the quickest way to be seen over 90 % of referrals aren’t cancer. I know my trust has a 37 week wait for general ent refferals. It won’t hell you if you’re anxious but best advise I can give us keep busy I take the attitude why worry over something I’ve no control off.
I found reading if watchjng box sets helped me the entire game of thrones was my choice.
Keep off dr google you’ll drive yourself mad with the what ifs.
    hope this helps

You can expect to have your neck felt for any swellings, your mouth examined and a nasoendoscopy. A narrow tube with a camera at the end is passed up your nose and down into your throat. Your doctor can look at the image on a screen. You might want to look too and have landmarks pointed out. It’s a little uncomfortable as the scope goes through your nose but you can ask for a local anaesthetic spray. I never bothered and I’ve had quite a few.
You'll likely be asked to say ooooo and eeeee which moves your vocal cords

If anything is amiss it’s probable that you’ll be told at the time if any further tests are needed.

Hazel is right. Don't look at Google.
90% of referrals are NOT cancer.
    Good  luck.

  • Agree with all the others have said. But to add I was very nervous to go to the ENT appointmeht too and hadn’t had any procedures before

. The tube up the nose to see your throat wasn’t painful at all. Don’t worry - easy to say I know, but there will more tests before they can tell you if it is cancer - so the ENT appointment is not an indicator that there is a problem.

    lots of luck

  • Thank you for replying! That does help a lot, been getting myself in a state thinking about it. But knowing what to expect deffo helps me prepare for it. Hope youre well!

  • Thank you - really appreciate you taking the time to reply. I’m in the same boat, not really had any medical things happen to me before so really apprehensive of even going to the hosp!

  • Thank you!!! Really appreciate it. Dr Google is deffo making it worse Sob I’m trying to stay busy and get into some hobbies, as you say it’s not going to make it come any quicker by sitting around worrying!!! Sounds easier than it is though.
