Loss of feeling and movement in tongue

Hello, a month ago I had a partial glossectomy (re-section) and selective neck dissection right side. I'm having real issues with my tongue. I've lost all sensation on the right side and movement is very restricted. I can't stick it put or move it very far to the left side of my mouth. It feels like I have 2 pieces of string inserted in my tongue and they tighten up when I try to move it. I've been doing tongue exercises to strengthen and stretch it but there's been.no improvement and I'm worried it might make things worse as after exercising it, the loss of sensation is even worse.

Has anyone had similar happen to them?

Many thanks.

  • Hi KitKat.  I had a procedure on the right side of my tongue at the start of the year but it was not as radical as yours.   I don't know if you are still having a soft diet but if I eat certain rough foods (chips etc) I have a numb sensation along the length of cut and pins and needles on the other side of my tongue.  I have mentioned this at my follows up appointments and they are not unduly concerned!  Do you not have a nurse contact at the hospital?

  • Good evening KitKat, i should not think the exercises are making matters worse,it could be a case of building up the muscles and waiting for the nerves to recover. But as Dani said get it checked out just for peace of mind. Good luck with your continued recovery, take care.

  • Thsnk you all for your replies, I was able to see my Consultant yesterday and he reassured me that there is nothing to worry about and, as Chris said, the nerves need to recover. He also said that nerves can take a long time to recover and that it's still early days as its 1 month since the op. Hopefully it'll get better in time.
