Hi,
I'm new here, but have been reading some of the posts which are all very inspirational as we all are thrown into these unexpected and traumatic battles for our health and futures.
I am 3 weeks post 30 sessions of radiation and 6 chemo for left tonsil cancer, which had spread a little to 2 lymph nodes in the neck.
I actually think I am doing pretty well and so this is a small grumble, but am maybe being impatient. I have a feed tube fitted, which has been a lifesaver. However, I can still swallow OK, albeit it lumpy and tight, and I have now started to try plain yoghurt, pureed food etc. I am surprised everything seems to sting the roof and back of mouth, enough to make the eyes water. I see no mention of this symptom in any other comments. The swallow works OK but its all very stingy in the mouth even where there was no direct treatment, its enough to put you off trying and to let it heal further????
As others have said, I realise its a slow process and its all healing day by day, but overall I am maybe doing well. Would love to get the tube moved asap, but maybe more patience is required!
Thanks for any replies, and good luck on your journeys!! Positivity is the key!!!
Hi EWN
Welcome to our community
Three weeks is really early in your recovery. It’s a marathon not a sprint.
If you’ve had RT to the back of your throat your soft palate and uvula take a real hit. No wonder you are still sore.
I was quite a bit better by six weeks, enough to be managing soft food, and turned a real corner at twelve. That seems to be what most of us report.
I was on morphine up to twelve weeks too
So don’t be disheartened. You’re on the right track and well done getting through treatment

Hi EWN welcome to the group. You are still very early in your recovery, it's great that you have feed tube, like you say they are a lifesaver, I know mine was. The stinging you have is normal, after the treatment you have just finished, you seem to be doing really well, I'm nearly 6 years post treatment, and I still get stinging in my mouth and tongue. Don't worry things will get better with time, let your body heal itself. Any worries just ask on here, someone will always help if they can.

Hi welcome from me the stinging is usual as others have said 3 weeks is really early. I was abje to sip endures but they sting dependent on flavour. Take it one day at a time it really is a marathon not a sprint bee all get there in the end.

I think the stinging is normal. For me anything acidic - citrusy or tomato-ey in particular - was a no-no for some months - also wine! But one year on, my taste buds and swallowing are pretty much back to normal. Hang in there!
September 2022 aged 63 diagnosed with HPV associated SCC base of tongue T4 N2 M0. Chemo & radiotherapy for 6 weeks ending Nov 2022. Now over 2 years all clear. See my profile for longer story
I'm about a month ahead of you (8 weeks after RT + chemo for left tonsil cancer). The problems I have with eating are not that it hurts, but that I don't want to eat and have little taste so don't enjoy food. But have stopped morphine and codeine now. I eat because I have to and can maintain weight without fortisips. Still quite fatigued, but it comes and goes a bit now.
To your question - it is my tongue that stings. Different with different things, but worst with mouth wash. Have yet to find one I can use without it hurting.

Hi there EWN. I had this pretty badly. I used to say it was like a ‘burning’. Some foods were ok though. Double cream being one and milk. No burning at all. It went on for some time but gradually improved over time. It will get better but don’t rush. All the best. Lizzie x
