Hi all bit worried so asking if this is normal. I had T3 base of tongue cancer , 30 radio and 6 Chemo treatments. I am now 7 months post treatment and although still no taste that probably will not improve according to ENT consultant, things have been ok as getting stronger and feeling better each week . PEG came out last week so things were on the up and up.
However although i have had no pain in throat for quite some time or any difficulty in swallowing , last couple of days things have changed. Have slight discomfort although not painful when swallowing and a feeling that maybe a swelling or something is occurring top of oesophagus. Also my voice has changed and become much deeper, i realise the new Barry White voice is making me more appealing to the ladies i am bit worried by these changes and whilst my mind has never dwelt on future re occurrence i am now getting bit anxious. Any one out there had anything similar . Thank you . Alan.
Hi Alan. I am very prone to sore throats and voice changes since RT. At first they worried me but I have learned not to be concerned unless something lasts for three weeks without improvement. Another thing to keep on top of is reflux which exacerbates symptoms. I am permanently on lansoprazole.
Bring it up at your next review or if that is some way away contact your CNS to get your mind put at rest. Your consultant won’t mind at all

Base of tongue cancer. T2N0M0 6 weeks Radiotherapy finished January 2019
Hi Alan i am also in omeprazole for acid reflux since treatment stopped. Which affects your voice as well. I would contact your cns to reassure you if you’re not due an appointment,as my consultant said on my last appointment I’m now5 years their door is always open. They would sooner see us than us worry As for taste never say never I’m still getting improvements albeit only tiny ones but every little helps.
best wishes Hazel x

Hi Alan, I can only add to what the ladies have already said. I am nearly 6 years post treatment, and I still get sore throats from time to time, which worry me less now than they did at first, I take Gaviscon advance every night, for reflux. It's just the new normal. Let your team know, at your next checkup.
Ray.
Hello. My voice is much deeper since treatment & I can no longer sing - no higher range at all. The changes have also affected my ability to pronounce certain sounds - I teach French - so I’ve had to adapt my teaching. I’m 18 months post treatment. I’ve had appointments with Speech & Lang & been given various voice exercises, but to no avail. I get sore throats now & again & use paracetamol & Difflam. When I swallow I can feel the scar tissue from treatment - perfectly normal according to my oncologist & my ENT consultants. .
