Can you lovely people please tell me how long it took for you to get your appetite back? My husband is currently 3 and a half months since end of treatment. If only he had an appetite he could eat so much more and gain more weight!
Also he has some taste although not completely...but Im hopeful he will regain it as he has some! How long did that take you to get your taste back? Its interesting to know what other people experienced.
Many thanks everyone.
Denise
Nine months.
it didn’t make any difference though. I made myself eat.
We are all different. I remember my oncologist telling me he had a patient who ate and tasted a burger the day he finished RT. I know a lady who is PEG fed 15 months after treatment because she can’t face eating.
Don’t worry Denise, the time will come. For the moment just getting enough calories in any way you can is all that’s needed.

Thanks Dani for your continued help. I cant wait for his appetite to come back so that he actually wants food!
Hi Denise Ti be totally honest took me a good while like Dani says. But I knew I needed the calories so took the attitude food is fuel and head down and forced the calories into nd. I used a smaller plate and some days 6 smaller meals The thought if food often it over faces us. Our tummy’s shrink snd for 15 month I ate 2500 calories a day without putting weight on. I was in recovery mode treatment takes that much out of us. Then one day the scales started moving so the cream cakes had to go. It really was a case if eat to live not live to eat. He will get there my small plate meals might have bern small one if souk followed later by poached egg on well buttered toast. Porridge with doubie cream snd honey was always my breakfast and best meal of the day. I still gave it daily minus the cream !

Hi Denise , my hubby is 3 weeks post rt and managed to eat during treatment and hasn't lost the taste. Hes now struggling to eat as keep telling me hes lost hes appetite and hes never been a big eater . Like yourself i worry and am making sure he has a couple of Frebusins a day so he has the calories. Hes now telling me that hes sick of these so like you feel lost at times. It will get better and just need to give it some time. Wishing ýou all the best xx
Good evening Denise, I would say it took me about six months, I just did it gradually trying different types of food starting off with soups, pureed food, or dairy desserts, and not forgetting eggs. I think using smaller plates can help as sometimes a big plate of food can be less appetising , but don't worry too much at the moment as long as he is not losing weight, slowly does it, all the best to you and your husband, take care.

Hi bridgetb
How about trying high calorie high protein smoothies. There are masses of recipes on The Net

Hi Dani
Your idea of high protein smoothies is a good one. It is amazing how many different flavours you can put together with a bit of imagination. I have a book on it and find my vitamiser makes quick work of pureeing all sorts of fruit with either yoghurt, full fat milk or coconut cream added. It makes the calories add up nicely. I found that I was losing weight after my last op and knew that I had to get on top of it or my body would not recover well and I didn't want to delay my recovery any longer than necessary. It is harder in reality to then eat more as your head just doesn't want to. There is no trick to it you just have to put your head down and make sure that you eat regularly whatever you can manage even if you have taste changes or no taste.Things definitely improve after a while, you just have to get through that phase.

Hi Bridget my best advice to you is to speak to the head and neck team and get them to have a word with your husband. The brutal fact is that he may not feel like eating or like the drinks but if he wants to keep his health and get through this the easiest way then he HAS to eat, appetite or not. I found my husband listened to the professionals much more seriously than he did me and he abides by what they said. Your husband can’t survive on only a couple of drinks per day. This affects you too and he needs to help himself and you at the same time. Ask them for a face to face meeting so they can impress upon him I wish you luck !
