My husband is on his final 7 week radiotherapy sessions for base of tongue and tonsil cancer. My question is,:  is it normal to have a scan prior to his Radiotherapy everyday?

He has also been in morphine, pregablin for the past week, and as of this morning, he is now has the addition of fantanyl patch...we are just worried about addiction...will he get addicted?

Thank you

  • Hi worrypants.

Some treatments are tailored every day so the radiographers scan the tumour before every zap. Don't worry about it. If that's happening it means less normal tissue is damaged as the cancer shrinks.

    Addiction. NO

You don't get addicted to therapeutic doses but what does happen is that the body gets used to the drug so that you have to have a gradual withdrawal at the end.

I was on long acting morphine twice daily plus oramorph and paracetamol. I removed the morning long acting dose first and reduced each oramorph dose then phased in reducing the night time dose over two weeks. I was on paracetamol for quite a while after.

I'm not sure how you reduce a patch. You should ask at his next review.

  • Hi it’s not unusual in my last week (7)I was scanned more often  the other weeks it was a Friday it was ti check how the tumour etc was shrinking and to tweak to machine to minimise damage. Addicted  no but as tailored withdrawal must be followed please don’t let him just stop I too like Dani withdrew slowly until I was on paracetamol.

remember after treatment finished he will continue to feel I’ll for a good few weeks. I slept fed snd did oral cleaning little walk repeat for a good 2 weeks.

Well I have to cough up that’s not exactly true. I woke up one morning to another day of analgesia by rote and thought, “sod this for a game of soldiers”

So I stopped. I’m medically qualified and you’d think I’d know better! Two hours later I was up the wall with withdrawal symptoms. Not much pain though!
So back to the rota but tweaked a little.

  • I remember you doing that. The way I did it was like everything else I had a spreadsheet and ticked off as I was reducing I stopped oramorph gradually then replace 30 mg cocodomol with 15 mg until every one was 15 mg then 8 mg finally paracetamol.
