Hello.
I finished my treatment for base of tongue cancer in January. T4n1m0 HPV P16+.I had 6 chemo and 35 radio.
I was just wondering how often people drink alcohol now.? I’m not a heavy drinker and probably only have a couple of glasses of wine or Prosecco a couple of times a month if out with friends, but wondering if people cut it out completely? I do enjoy the wine but then feel guilt the next day.
just another life adjustment to get used to lol.

I still enjoy a couple of pints of real ale now and then but avoid spirits.
Four and a half years clear for me.

Hi 5 years for me my mouth can’t tolerate any alcohol I can manage the odd alcohol free beer if out . I wasn’t a drinker pre cancer so I’m ok with not having anything.
If your mouth can tolerate it have a word with consultant at your next appointment. I remember mine saying in early days moderation in all things. I’m the odd ball re taste in treatment I never lost taste but I’ve now accentuated taste no way can I eat currys pickled spices. Just shows how we are all different.

Yes, but my taste in what I drink has changed (for the better). Now into IPA, real ales etc rather than fizzy lager. Also drink wine and spirits - all in moderation, of course. Being in Scotland at the moment one must do their best to support the local industries
Hi Sarah , I finished treatment start of January for tonsil cancer and lymph’s . I used to love red wine and a wee Irish whiskey but at the moment both a no go as alcohol burns my mouth and red wine dries it out immediately , all I can tolerate is a pint or so of lager and sometimes a diluted rose wine. I’m hoping that this will ease and I will once again be able ( hoping Xmas time) enjoy a tipple There is a previous thread also about this subject as I think it’s a part of life a lot of people take for granted until something like this happens and then you can’t !! Hope you’ll soon get back to your tipple , in moderation of course
Hi
I'm like Peter was always Fosters but now a smooth bitter, I have never drank spirits in quantity or wine but I find any sparkling wine is a no no but that may be due to my OC cancer rather than Laryngectomy
Enjoy what you want really as you have survived this so ENJOY
Take Care

Sarah, just to add to my previous post... You have one life so live it how you want to. Enjoy what you want to and don't put off until tomorrow what you want to do today. That may be the most valuable lesson I have learned from my cancer
Peter, never a truer word spoken, as the man says your a long time dead . Enjoy your life and do whatever gives you pleasure and care not what anyone says or thinks , it’s your life.
Good evening Sarah, i agree with the other comments and i remember my consultant saying to me "It's okay to have a drink as long as it's in moderation but avoid spirits " Wine is ok and some say a bit of red wine can be of a benifit like the others i dont drink lagers anymore i stick to real ales and Guinness as they are less gassy and it took me a long time to actually appreciate a good beer, i stick to half pints nowadays. Enjoy life Sarah and cheers.
Hi Sarah
I say go for it in moderation. It is great that you are able to enjoy the taste of alcohol again. Like Hazel I was never a drinker but had the odd white wine when I was out. Unfortunately now the only things I can tolerate because of taste changes is water and Fortisip. I used to enjoy a lot more variety in drinks but sadly that seems to be the extent of it for me. I drink vicariously through others now. I smell the aroma from drinks and imagine I am drinking it. That works pretty well. Thank goodness for the sense of smell.

Thank goodness for the sense of smell.
You are so right, Lyn
In my early recovery the only way I could make sense of what I was eating was from the aroma of the food.
I got really adept at blowing the air over the food I was chewing back up through my nose.
