Wisdom teeth removal

Hi all

I had my op for parotid gland and nymph lode removal. The dentist requested my wisdom teeth be removed during surgery but as I was under anaesthetic for 13 hours they ran out of time and didn’t do it.  The dentist is now saying I need to get it done before I start radiation. I’m very reluctant to do this as the initial op has knocked me off my feet and I don’t want another procedure!  Has anyone else come across this before?   Thanks

  • Hi Kazzie. Get an opinion from your own dentist as to whether they are healthy.
I have a friend who was advised to have all molars out. Some centres are mad about extracting teeth. They refused and have been well years down the line
Me? I would get that second opinion. The only reason to extract them is if they are diseased and likely to need coming out in the future in which case there is a risk of osteoradionecrosis.
You have to double down on oral care after RT anyway

They are your teeth and you don’t have to have them out. Treatment will proceed anyway.

  • Thank you so much!  That’s made me feel happier lol.

  • Hi can only echo what  Dani has said. Get a 2 nd opinion I know lots who have had perfectly good teeth removed and are now  struggling with eating. One trust in particular routinely takes 8 teeth out 2 from each side.

  • I agree Dani, its always good if you can keep your teeth for as long as possible, but of course if they are suspect then its best to have them removed beforehand as they can become a problem later. Normally it's a more specialised and experienced dentist who should decide. Good luck , take care,

  • Hi, I was sent for dental X-Rays on the first day of meeting my Team, and was told I needed to have 2 molars removed on Right side for definite, and it would be better if 3 on the other side were also removed, prior to Radiotherapy. They all looked healthy to me, but they said the underlying bone structure wasn't good enough to with stand the Radiation & I would be at risk of complications later. Mt dentist said she saw nothing wrong with them either.

I was in shock from diagnosis & hearing treatment plan, and reliant on them to advise & do what's best for me. Unfortunately, I'll never know if it was necessary, but I do know, for me, it was the most traumatic part of this journey.

  • Trouble is you need a dentist who knows about radiation side effects on bone to make the judgement. Temper that with the fact that some trusts seem to whip teeth out willy nilly. I didn’t need any out but subsequently did a year or so after RT. The dentist at my practice told me he would happily implant where I had a gap but that I was entitled to free implants on the NHS. The hospital dentist told me that my sinus was too close for a successful implant.

How in earth are we to choose?
