Confirmed diagnosis and treatment

So, OH had his meeting this morning and confirmed stage 2 cancer of the epiglottis and two lymph nodes affected.

They are not going to operate as they feel confident that 6 weeks chemo/radiotherapy will be the correct course of action for him.  Said he will probably need a feeding tube which he is not keen on but I don’t think he realises how difficult it will be to eat.

Unfortunately treatment is not at our local hospital so I have to take half day leave every day for 6 weeks but work is being brilliant and hopefully can use our compassionate leave option.

Not looking forward to the next few months but the news is better than we feared so onwards and upwards.

  • Just take a deep breath and heads down. We are all here for you to answer any questions and to share personal experiences. I lived a two hour journey from Swansea where I was treated and on some days we were away all day. I too didn’t have surgery, jyst six weeks of RT.
You get into the swing of things.
    Best wishes.

  • Thank you Blush luckily I have brilliant bosses as it looks like I will need to take half day leave every day throughout his treatment and she is looking into getting compassionate leave for me so I don’t have to use all my annual leave.

one day at a time now Slight smile

  • Hi Rizzle, it's good he now has his treatment plan, once it gets under way, you will both feel better about it all. It's good he will be having a feeding tube, they are a lifesaver if eating becomes difficult, and they take the worry of not eating away. If you have any worries or questions, you can ask on here, someone will always help if they can. All the best to you both.

    Regards Ray.

  • Hi one day at a time you’ll get there. Just a word some days will ge longer especially chemo days is he’s having weekly chemo thise days may be 5-6 hours as radiotherapy will all heed ti be fitted in. On other days he may heed to see oncologist if nurses. So just let work know you may need a bit if flexibility  . My journey to hospital could be up to 90 mins if traffic was bad admittedly I asked for first appointments if day wherever possible. So I did get caught up in work traffic my hubby drove every day. A feeding tube will be a great aid a few manage without a tube but mine was s lifesaver. I had a ng tube fitted week 3 for 6 weeks it did aid my recovery.
    many questions ask.
I didn’t have surgery I did have lymph node involvement.

  • Good evening Rizzle, sorry to hear that your OH has been told he has cancer of the epiglottis, its good that they are confident they can treat it with six weeks of treatment, having a feeding tube will be a great asset because the side effects of the treatment can cause swallowing difficulties, thankfully his consultant has offered one. I know from personal experience how it made life that much easier rather than struggling with swallowing. Lets hope your work will allow you paid time off, most companies are pretty good when it comes to this sort of issue. Wishing you both all the best for the treatment and recovery. Take care.
