I had a neck dissection because of cancer. Years later I have sustained an injury to my chin on the side where lymph nodes were removed. The wound has formed a hard, plum-sized lump. It’s healing and not infected, but the lump is unusual and very hard. Could this be because the way it recovers is limited by the lack of lymph nodes? Would gentle massage help? Has anyone experienced injury after lymph node removal?
Thanks for any advice.
Hi Daffne. It’s more likely due to fibrosis but do check with your team.

Hi Daffne
Fibrosis just means scarring so the tissue gets thicker and less flexible

Thanks. This is a very fresh wound and in the early, healing stage. It’s not immediately on top of a previous scar, just the side of surgery and lymph node removal.
I was assuming the swelling was more an immediate reaction to trauma, but wondered how the lack of lymph nodes affected the reaction of the immune system function. But I will ask about fibrosis.
I will be having a routine check in a few weeks time, as luck would have it.
Thanks x

I think a collateral circulation of lymph develops
It must do otherwise we would all be suffering from lymphodema for ever
