Has anyone else had a problem with their Rig's / Peg's leaking after fitting, if so, how long did it take before it stopped ?

I had mine fitted back in the middle of April and it is still leaking Unamused

  • Hi Cat

Mine (PEG) did leak a bit at times but I was able to just clean around it with some gauze/salt water. There were a couple of times it looked quite yukky so the Nutricia Nurse came out to assess it. Both times it was infected and needed antibiotics but they quickly sorted it out.

    Hope that's of some help

  • Hi Cat

I had my RIG put in in November 22 and still to this day it leaks.  I clean the RIG daily but the nutrition nurses don't seem to be particularly worried as long as I keep it clean.  It doesn't leak as much as it did in the early days though.

Sorry I can't be more encouraging.

  • Good evening, i think the ballon-type PEG does tend to weep, i have had a PEG since 2009 and on the whole have not had any issues with it, just make sure the water is changed every few weeks as they do lose water due to body heat. As long as it's not leaking continuously and does not giving any discomfort then just keep the PEG site clean. Take care.

  • Thanks  ,   and

It's still having to be dressed each day due to the amount it's leaking. Sometimes it leaks that much it comes through the dressing and i end up with a wet patch on my T Shirt. I'm wearing dungerees at the moment so it doesn't show when it does come right through, just getting a little fed up with it now. Unamused

I also have another infection at the moment and back on antibiotics.

Mine is a RIG Chris, so the water in the balloon is changed once a week with those Slight smile

  • Good afternoon Cat, i think the RIG is fitted differently so i dont really know about the comparison of leaking, i think once the infection settles down you should see an improvement, sometimes you may require stronger antibiotics if it returns quite often as i have found out through experience. I also have to have my feeding tube changed earlier than recommended because the body starts rejecting it so its changed every 4 months instead of six or when i feel it becoming uncomfortable. Hang on in there they are great when infection free, enjoy the rest of your day

  • Hi Cat, I had a RIG tube fitted 24/02, when dressing was removed it was infected - leaking gunk continuously, treated with IV/ oral antibiotics. Seemed to clear up, was back after the next 2 Chemos. In total I had 3 courses of antibiotics before the infection cleared, plus Fuicidin cream to apply to puncture site. After that there was the tiniest bit of leakage now and again, but eventually - end of April it dried up & stayed dry. Whilst the skin round the puncture site was raw & painful, I tucked the tail under bra band to try to stabilise it, as tail movement hurt, all the time. Maybe if they haven't already, they could swab leakage just in case it's mild, chronic infection xx

  • Hi Petlamb

There's a bit of history behind mine Unamused

The surgeon did the stitches too tight which erroded the stoma site, I had to go into the hosplice for a couple of weeks. cut a long story short, he ended being reprted. The stitch holes have not long healed and it's still leaking a lot.

I had an infection in the past and another which is just clearing up, with the help of cream and antibiotics. My Kahbi nurse came out yesterday and has said i'm getting them because of it leaking stomach acids etc. She got me to use Flaminal cream again. This cream is absolutley fantastic stuff, it pushes all the 'nasties' out and heals the wound from the inside, i've never known anyting so good, it's magic stuff !!

I'm hoping the Flaminal is going to help close the stoma more so there's no 'room' for it to leak anymore

Like you it's also rubbed and made it sore, but in my case i had it tucked in too tight, which pulled it to one side and rubbed some skin away again.

Just been a bit of a long haul with this and looking forward the end.
