Hi, I finished my final radiotherapy on 12th May. I do not have a feeding tube so am just drinking fortisips. My question is, when are you able to start eating normal food again as the fortisips are getting a bit tiresome. The hospital are sending out scales & a tablet to remotely monitor my weight & I know I’ve dropped. If I knew I could eat soon at least I could imagine I could regain some weight. I know our Cancer Centre here in Belfast seems to do things rather differently to the mainland. Any help welcome.
Try. There's no better way to see. Experiment with small amounts.
BUT you are only one week out of treatment. Your RT is still working for another fortnight. There is no rush.
Soft foods to start. In no particular order....Poached egg. Scrambled egg with Philly added to keep it soft. Tinned fruit especially peaches which slide down easily. Sweet potato mash (not ordinary potato which is grainy). Porridge...Ready Brek is a good one to start with. Tinned macaroni cheese. Biscuits dunked in warm tea. Toasted teacake with lashings of butter. Soft Crumpet...again with butter.
Others will come along with more suggestions but these are a start. I was beginning to eat all of these by six weeks

PS. How many Fortisips are you drinking? You need 2.5/3K Calories. That's 6/8 Fortisips

with double cream, where you can add lots of butter
Ray is spot on.
A long time ago I was on a posh safari ( honeymoon)
We had the most wonderful porridge from an old pan nestled in warm campfire embers.
It was thick and creamy.
I asked for the recipe ( which I got as it was a really expensive trip)
The chef added condensed milk and butter to it while it cooked! No wonder it was wonderful!
For the first 18 months after treatment when I started to eat I could eat anything, never put weight on. It was great. Then suddenly everything changed and just like BC I have to watch what I eat.

Hi Mmac
You definitely need to up the amount of Fortisips you are drinking. When I was discharged on Fortisips only my dietician said that I needed to have 6 a day to maintain my weight of 63k.g. otherwise I would lose weight. It is a bit of a fuss but I managed it and did not lose weight. It just seems that you are forever drinking them to get in the right amount but it was worth it. It is only short term and as you are able to eat more you can cut back. I still have to take 4 Fortisips a day plus what pureed food I can manage. I initially was only having 3 Fortisips and was losing weight so had to up it. You eventually get into a routine and it works fine. You just have to get your head around it and realise that it definitely improves over time.
