Hiccups!

My husband has just started chemo/radio and he has hiccups which are keeping him up all night! Has anyone else had them and how long did they last please?

he's taking anti sickness drugs as recommended but they aren't making much difference.  The nurses said its probably the steroids which he's finished taking now.  He really needs his rest, poor guy!

    Hi Chicadee

Hiccoughs are an annoying side effect of my Cisplatin chemo treatment... tried a few things...nothing quite worked...then I tried sucking ice cubes...very small or crushed (large can be a choking hazard}....worked for me...now on liquid dexamethasone (the culprit?)....best consult your support team first (pharmacist)

    Good luck

  • Many thanks Peter, will try that if it happens again after next Chemo. Its actually stopped after two days...big relief as affecting his sleep.  The nurses say its the Chemo that affects the diaphragm nerve.

  • Hi Chicadee16

My husband was exactly the same as yours, everytime he had chemo he ended up with hiccups all night, his oncologist put him on Lansprazole 30 mg, they seemed to do the trick.
Fingers crossed he can get rid of them.

    Hi Chicadee

Glad it worked...I keep a supply in the freezer....just to nip the hiccoughs in the bud...they did start again after next chemo...but comfortably controllable....

  • I will keep some in freezer too. I wonder if gripe water works too?

    Thanks for your help x
