RIG tube fell out

Hi all,

My RIG tube fell out today!

I was just about to be 100% tube fed for nutrition and hydration. So that sucks...

I have been admitted and currently waiting (and waiting...) for IV fluids.

The balloon inflation valve on the RIG failed and the water came out. I was walking out of the hospital and the tube dropped out of my clothes.

So, I currently have a nasogastric tube keeping the hole open and  will be going to xray tomorrow to try and replace it.

Could really do without this as I am in Week 4, really starting to feel the side effects and I have a blood clot (see my recent post).

So hungry and thirsty Disappointed

Rant over...

Steve

  • Oh dear Steve. Can they fit a n g tube if the rig can’t be replaced  I managed 3 weeks pre snd 3 weeks post with the nasal tube. All hydration nutrition and meds went in that way. Make sure someone ensures you get something inside you tonight. Keep on top of pain meds. Especially if you’re on oramorph or cocodomol you don’t want cold Turkey on top of everything else. Rant anytime.

  • Thanks, Hazel.

I guess NG tube is possible, but,  if they can't simply put a new RIG through the hole, I think they would try another RIG (using a NG to guide).

I want to go home (first night ever in hospital).

  • Oooh sorry to hear this SteveyN, I hope they get you sorted soon.

I'm having a RIG fitted next week, so as you do.. !! i've been looking up about them. I understand that if it does come out, they can put another in the same sight.

Hope you've had a comfotable night.

  • Thanks, Cat.

They have managed to fit a new one in the same hole, but it wasn't a certainty...

I should say that dramatic balloon deflations are rare. Most of the health team had never seen it happen before.

I ended up in hospital for 24 hours, unable to feed or drink, with just a glucose IV drip.

The thin NG tube that a junior dr put in the hole had managed to keep it from closing up. I am grateful to him.

It was not a simple reinsertion. They have to be sure it has gone right into stomach. It needs a full surgical team and live xray (same as original fitting). So, I had to wait for a surgical slot, yesterday afternoon. They warned me that it they couldn't get it to go in, then I was looking at an NG for a few days and new procedure to fit a RIG through a new hole. Relieved that this wasn't necessary!

    Hopefully, sorted now!

  • Hi Steve

I pulled mine out while drawing the water out of the balloon.

My wife inserted the plug that had been supplied to me and phoned the Abbot nurse. Who arrived at our house about an hour later and fitted a new rig.

Very impressed with the Abbot team
