Tongue cancer - did yours come back?

I had tongue cancer nearly five years ago. The lump on my tongue was removed along with part of my tongue and I had a tongue flap created from my forearm. I had lymph nodes removed and they indicated at the time that the cancer hadn’t spread. All good.

I now have a sore lump on the underside of my tongue which Bonjela doesn’t touch and it’s been there around 10 days. Dentist has referred me but the specialist who did my op in their maxillofacial dept is no longer there and I’m being referred to a different unit and expecting them to call soon.

So I’m curious. Has anyone’s tongue cancer returned? And what is happening now? I’m aware that head and neck cancer can return but I’m not finding much info about recurrence specifically of tongue cancer. Would REALLY appreciate picking someone’s brain.

xx

  • Hi. There are not many people here with the sort of cancer you had. Most of us have HPV + oropharyngeal tumours. You might get more info from young tongues. They have active social media groups too

  • OK thanks. I’m by no means young so that wouldn’t be appropriate.

  • If you’re under sixty I think they let you in. I got chucked out because I’m over 70.

  • That seems a bit of a random rule - 69 is young but 70 is not?! But each group to its own, I guess.

  • HI  Not sure I can be helpful as my case is somewhat unique.  In late 2019 it was confirmed that I had an HPV driven cancer from a lymph node.  Despite some indications on scans and having my tonsils & remaining  lymph nodes removed as well as tongue biopsies no sign of the cancer primary.  I elected not to have RT.  They decided the body immune system had dealt with the primary.  Was advices a 60-70% chance of it re-emerging.  15 months later my surgeon noticed a very small lump in my tongue.  Biopsy confirmed it as a tumour.  Scans did not show it.  A few weeks later I went for a partial glossectomy only to be woken up to be told the tumour had once again gone.  Again elected on no RT.  I have had a few scares since including lumps in my tongue but none have been found to be cancer.  I am keeping further surgery and RT for another return but hoping it will never be used.

Hopefully your scare will be just that.
