Hi,
Partner is having some of his tongue removed due to a tumor and replaced with tissue from forearm. He has been told that his speech will be permanently affected. The speech therapist said he should be understandable but will struggle with certain sounds. Just wondered if there was any insight on how bad it might be please.
Thank you
Hi and welcome. You might be pleasantly surprised how well the speech will end up. I have a friend who had half her tongue removed and all I can discern is a slight lisp.

Thanks Wendy. He had the surgery yesterday. It was upsetting when he got admitted as he found out they are taking 50%, possibly a third of his tongue. I think he feels quite hopeless about it, I told him I have spoken to people from Macmillan and this forum and he will heal and be able to speak etc, but obviously I haven't been through this myself. I feel awful to think of him lying there thinking he is doomed (I know he isn't) and will never have the same quality of life again.
Tell him it will be okay. I lost somewhere between a third and half of my tongue & most people just think I have a lisp. Tell him to be patient. I had to have radiotherapy after, hopefully he won't. It probably took me up to about 3 years to be at my best from an eating and speaking point of view. It will be 6 years in November since my op. I also had a neck dissection to remove my lymph nodes.

Thank you, this really helps and I will tell him x
Scared today that he will need radiotherapy. How soon after your surgery did you find out you needed it please Wendy?

I think they tell you as soon as the biopsy results are back. Has he had a PET scan to see if there is any lymph node involvement?
My neighbour had tongue surgery and avoided RT but her tumour was small and the excision was simple.

Thanks Dani. He had a biopsy, CT and MRI and they said there was no evidence that it has spread, but he has still had a neck dissection so I am worried now that we will get the news he will need radiotherapy/chemotherapy. He is very low.
